Is there a glossary somewhere here?

Hey everyone,

I was referred here because I was looking for a new watch. I've taken a look around for info and to make a decision, but I am unfamiliar with watches and watch terms.

The only thing that I could find was:

I was hoping for a bigger watch glossary. Coming across a few sites, I have found different terms like tourbillon, mechanical/swiss movement, sweeping seconds and a few other things I found pretty cool. I can always wiki to see what they mean, but I don't exactly know what to look for in a watch until I stumble across them, like this watch:

I don't know the name of the guard over the buttons and yet I would like to search to see if other watches have a similar feature :(

Can anyone help me out with a comprehensive glossary?

There are some reference pages on some of the gen sites. Here is one from Timezone.
As for the guards over the buttons, not many other watches (or should I say I have not seen many other watches) other than Panerai have that feature. And on the Panerai it is called the crown guard. But they don't have it over the chrono pushers.

Lets not get snippy. Did I not give you some info to get you started. Search is your friend. And spend some time just reading the threads here. Look at the wrist check threads. Look at watch retailer sites to get an idea of what you like. Look at the watches at Trusty's site. Invest some of your own time. Then come back and ask questions.

That's just it, brother. If you don't know what to look for, then use google.com or wikipedia.com.

There is no real appendix of terms used for general watchmaking, watch models, or watchsmithing on repgeek, other than what jjenk has provided you.

What you need to do is google the term "watch parts", "watch innerworkings", "watch smithing", or something like that so that you can see all the different parts that go into all kinds of watches.

Believe me, though. You won't "pick up" all the knowledge about watches and different models by reading an appendix. You have to just read all the things you can gather about watches, and over time, you'll learn.
