Old Member, saying goodbye to Rep!

I was the kind of kid that was fascinated with how things work and how they were put together. My GIJoes all had different bodies and arms when I was finished with them. I used to get yelled at by my father for taking apart radios and walkmans...lol

It has been a fun ride, I have owned ALOT of reps. And as a watch fanatic, I loved wearing them and tinkering with them, looking at their movements. The reps made me want to have the Gens, and now that I have gens, the reps have been sitting in the closet.

You sure? I have A LOT of gens and reps, and must say its hard to get rid of my reps altogether. I mostly use them for experimentation or gen stand-ins or for creating fantasy versions of the gen or as gap fillers in my gen collection to keep things interesting.

Gens are great if you can afford to acquire them but they can get boring in the long term as you would have nothing to improve or work on unlike reps.

I did my playing around with the Reps.

But that is the fun of reps, I can always go back to it.

It's just my reps have been sitting in my closet for a long time. Maybe I just need new models?

In this hobby gen/rep/fantasy watches what I've noticed is that none of it matters. At the end of the day we all share your intrigue in taking things apart as most boys do. I find much less joy in wearing my watches as I do with researching for the best parts for the budget, waiting for it to all come in, and then getting to work!

Once I'm done I wear them maybe a few weeks and BAM! done...

To the for sale section and off to find a new build.

BTW, I live in Houston too. We should have a GTG sometime so I can see all these reps before they go onward to warm loving wrists.

I've met one other local member who I'm helping get into building his own vintage pieces (I'm on HF more than here)

When you're back in town hit me up. I PM'ed you my cell number and I'm trying to pry at one of your other pieces I've read you discuss about in the past.

Lovely gen collection.

If you leave, do visit us sometimes, a new rep era has started with all those 1:1 stuff (for example the Hublot Diver, AP Diver). It might be interesting to check out the new releases now and then.

I buy reps cos I don't wanna travel with my gens. Especially eastern europe where it can be a bit dodgy. For the price I pay for a gen "cheap" watch e.g citizen or casio. I might as well wear a rep and don't compromise with my appreciation of watch design and my appearance. Don't get me wrong I love telling people I wear reps cos they are shocked how good quality they are, compared to your normal knock offs you get from street vendors.

Oh you'll come back... they all do. ;)

Sounds like you need to re-indulge in reps especially the newer offerings. I say go slow from now on since you already have a core collection of gens that you fancy a lot. Use the new reps (as I did) as gap fillers in your gen collection or as beaters of your gens or as a fantasy version of your gen. And leave out the standard reps ...

Have you seen some of the newer rep models? Member edgematic mentioned a few upcoming great reps. The new reps these days are so much more accurate, reasonably priced and reliable than they used to be. Now is NOT the time to leave the hobby but to start picking up these interesting new offerings which in the past would have cost you multiples more of what you pay now for an out of the box version and less accuracy.

Agreed.

From my research models that were as good as the ones we have out of the box costing $200-300 or even $400-500 used to be 2-4 times as much to build with lots of modification required in the past.

All of this in just a span of maybe 1 to 2 years!!!

The rep game truly has changed for the better as of recently.

I have to say lovely collection above, you will want something new though, something will catch your eye!

Also when you know what your grails are it's perfect to step up from rep to gen, but when buying solely in gen format from now on it will get a little hairy out-laying huge money on watches you are not 110% sure are gonna be long time keepers!

That's when the reps will come back into play! :D

Same thing here, my REPS just sit in the box now, all I wear are GENS, just a completely different "feel" about a GEN

Its a different thrill about reps, the research, the modding, re luming polishing etc. bought case back openers just to marvel at the innards, tried removing hands etc!
With my gens i never dared open them nor even polish them, i send them to the AD. With gens its buy and wear.
With reps "its like a box of choclates, you will never know what you will get"
So it is hard very very hard to be done with reps. Its an adventure!

There is one rep that has me tickled right now:

a Seiko FFF!

Not really a rep. More of an homage mod on a gen watch. But yeah, the FFF mod is a nice addition to a Seiko collection.

The only Rep I'm keeping. A 210 I put together. cant seem to sell it

Wow, you have an amazing (and expensive) collection I could only dream about. The Patek Nautilus and AP Royal Oak alone must be between 30-40k!! Are any of the Nautilus reps good quality? Stick around, don't leave! :munch:
