Does anyone know if there is a way to do an advanced search on the forums?
By this I mean being able to use "AND", "NOT" or for a particular phrase (usually put in quotes). Nothing seems to work using the "Advanced" option in the menu.
Thanks

Not possible?
The search engine for VB plain sucks. its more miss than hit during searches.
The Boolean search must be activated by the System administrator. This makes search a little better.
What really improves search is tagging that is avalible in vb ver. 3.8. Also, a completely new search system is planed to be introduced by jelsoft for VB 4.
The forum admin has enabled web spider indexing, so you could try this in google search:
site:repgeek.com rolex dssd
Copy this and paste it in google search to test.
The <site:repgeek.com> is the search syntax and <rolex dssd> is the search frase, that should be modifyed to your liking. You can ad more words for refinement.

wow i did a search for "search" and actually found this (a rarity) :)
Really would be nice to be able to do advanced search!
Could the Admin let us know if he is aware of the option to activate the "boolean search" function in vBulletin and would he possibly activate it? ;)
As the admins are obviously busy cleaning up after the last outage, I thought I'd do some research on vBulletin and its options. Well, after do a little searching on the topic, then downloading the official 3.6 manual I fully concur with the Sylar - vBulletin sucks, big time - and will stop flogging the subject. Feel free to close this poll (of one :D) and the thread.
I dont think its fair to say tha VB sucks. The limitations sometimes lyes in PHP, but vhit the never versions of php in combo whit the latest vb, 3.8, the options to tag and mark threads is much better.
What we also can see comming - and maybe this is what the admin awaits - is the major upgrade to to vb4. This should sort out the shortcomings that vb currently suffers from.
Why so many choose vb? The options for the admins to tweak the forum is just great.
True. Only difference is that there´s a ****load of forum engines around, and admins still choose vb. Strange? Not really. It gives the admins the perfect tools for any community, and if somethings missing it can always be solved whit plug-ins. Ok, the search is veird, and it doesn´t work great out-of-the-box, but that can be mastered. Read the manual for 3.8.3 and see for yourself.
Well I don't know much about vBulletin, just that its search function, as implemented in the version that this forum uses, does suck. And commenting on how great it is for admins to use, or provides them with perfect tools doesn't fix vBulletin's search function for me. I am an end user and only care about what vBulletin has done for me lately - being the selfish pri*k I am :)
Anyway, I'm not going to criticize or complain about it any more.
Goodnight
Whatever...
