When did we get a swear word filter?

I just noticed that when I typed a post with a mildly risque word that it got **** out? I'll admit it's rare that I use swear words in posts but in this occasion it was in context and I'm sure I've seen them here before. Is this recent innovation?

The funny thing is that those of us raised using British English always spell arse as (obviously) arse... Being lazy, I'd used the word "a s s", which got bleeped out!! It appears I'm still free to talk about having the ****s however as long as it doesn't involve donkeys!!!

I was wondering about that. I sent a PM to someone last week, had the word f*** in it (I am purposely using asterisks here), and it was transmitted as ****. This was a PM, mind you. I can understand, though not agree, with filtering the public posts, but whatever is written in PM should be off-limits to censoring of any type.

I **** understand it either.. I guess it's part of ensuring that RG is family friendly. Not sure why adults collecting illegal counterfeit goods should be on par with Sesame Street and Disney, kind of funny :) I suppose it's for people who browse at work and might have someone looking over their shoulder who might freak out over the F-word or a sliver of a nipple. The filters are being tweaked as we speak.

The filter is either on or off, PM's cannot be separated from general posts.

U’d think a profanity filter would be an option in the CP and set to ON as default ? Strange it’s a system wide setting.

For me no, not at all.

The only downside I can see is it makes a mildly rude joke a bit hard to post with the profanity filter on.

I don't mind it at all. You can tell what people are trying to say anyway.

I work with profanity filtering on e-mail systems and the default word lists are bizarre to say the least.
Hopefully the admin are able to check through and edit the list so that only the genuinely vulgar and offensive words are filtered.

Also, perhaps there should be a poll to decide whether 'Dave123' should be considered a swear word :lol:

Wow! ...and Tits doesn't even belong on the list. That is such a friendly
sounding word. It sounds like a nickname, right? "Hey, Tits, come here,

snack, doesn't it? Yes, I know, it is a snack. I don't mean your sexist
snack. I mean New Nabisco Tits!, and new Cheese Tits, Corn Tits,
Pizza Tits, Sesame Tits, Onion Tits, Tater Tits. "Betcha Can't Eat Just
One." That's true. I usually switch off. But I mean, that word does
not belong on the list. Actually none of the words belong on the list,
but you can understand why some of them are there. I'm not
completely insensetive to people's feelings. I can understand why
some of those words got on the list, like ********** and
Mother****er. Those are heavyweight words. There is a lot going on
there. Besides the literal translation and the emotional feeling.
I mean, they're just busy words. There's a lot of syllables to contend
with. And those Ks, those are agressive sounds. They just jump out at
you like "**********, mother****er. **********, mother****er."
It's like an assualt on you. We mentioned **** earlier, and 2 of the
other 4-letter Anglo-Saxon words are Piss and ****, which go
together of course. A little accidental humor there. The reason that
Piss and **** are on the list is because a long time ago, there were
certain ladies that said "Those are the 2 I am not going to say. I
don't mind **** and **** but 'P' and 'C' are out.", which led to such
stupid sentences as "Okay you ****ers, I'm going to tinkle now."
And, of course, the word ****. I don't really, well that's more
accedental humor, I don't wanna get into that now because I think
it takes too long. But I do mean that. I think the word **** is a very
important word. It is the beginning of life, yet it is a word we use to
hurt one another quite often. People much wiser than I am said,
"I'd rather have my son watch a film with 2 people making love
than 2 people trying to kill one another. I, of course, can agree. It is
a great sentence. I wish I knew who said it first. I agree with that but
I like to take it a step further. I'd like to substitute the word **** for
the word Kill in all of those movie cliches we grew up with. "Okay,
Sheriff, we're gonna **** you now, but we're gonna **** you slow."
So maybe next year I'll have a whole ****in' ramp on the N word.
I hope so. Those are the 7 you can never say on television, under any
circumstances. You just cannot say them ever ever ever. Not even
clinically. You cannot weave them in on the panel with Doc, and Ed,
and Johnny. I mean, it is just impossible. Forget those 7. They're out.
But there are some 2-way words, those double-meaning words.
Remember the ones you giggled at in sixth grade? "...And the ****
CROWED 3 times" "Hey, the **** CROWED 3 times. ha ha ha ha. Hey, it's in the bible. ha ha ha ha. There are some 2-way words, like it is okay for Kirk Youdi to say "Roberto Clementi has 2 balls on him", but he can't say "I think he hurt his balls on that play, Tony. Don't you? He's holding them. He must've hurt them, by God." and the other 2-way word that goes with that one is Prick. It's okay if it happens to your finger. You can prick your finger but don't finger your prick. No,no.

Hmmmm, judging by the changes to George Carlin's routine since I posted it earlier today, it looks like tweaks have been made to the bad-word filter.

On a more serious note..

having quite a bit of experience with profanity filters...

It's bloody hard to write a good one... I mean, it's near impossible to write one that will actually stop people who *really* want to swear..

now, i know this is a grown ups forum, so shouldnt be too much of people doing their darndest to circumvent it.. but.. its tricker than you'd think to catch em all (and false positives are amazingly prevalent)

An early version of ours.. had.. issues..

we'd see all sorts of weird things being filtered, like

'guellermo del toro, the gr*** **xican director' (eat me)

to all sorts of random weird results.

not to go off topic
but yea

tonight i am pulling an all nighter...

i slept in late yesterday (late night partying)

and tomorrow (this morning) at 8am, the apartment complex is starting 'fire alarm testing' for the whole day..

so, rather than either way up early and leave the apartment

decided, i'd rather not be woken up by sirens.. tends to ruin my morning

so, I'm preparing for a full day out..


also working on packing, and making plans for the move, etc etc
