I'd Like to Clarify a Point

Dear Forum,

Yesterday, I submitted a post titled "How to Properly Rock a Pocket Square." This is not an article I wrote myself, and although I cited the author, some felt that I was trying to mislead the reader. That was not my intent.

The articles that I post usually will not be written by my self. Rather, they are interesting articles that I find and want to share with others. I could simply post a link, but my goal is inform our forum in the most convenient way possible. Thus, I take the time to recreate the article here. As a father, a husband and a CEO I often don't have the time to write something original, but I do enjoy sharing the information that I find relevant.

Besides, I'm too busy shining my watches.

PS. I'll make an effort to better illustrate a source for any of the "All Things Relatively Cool" posts.

What matters isn't that you were the author but you took time out of your day to reasearch and post something a lot of us were interested in.

I've been shaving with straight razors and safety razors since I was 15- learned from my Grandfather. Who knows maybe someone here will start a tradition with their son!

Same with pocket squares finishing a suit. I get looked at crosseyed when I wear a hat and a pocket square but to me a suit isn't a suit unless it is topped off and decked out correctly!

I had no problem with your post at all and enjoyed reading it. You CLEARLY post the authors names at the bottom of the post.

Razor, thanks for the clarification. I don't think it was ever your intent to pass off someone else's work as your own. It seems at least some people read your posts and were under the impression that you were the author, so clearing up the issue is appreciated. The articles on artofmanliness.com are of interest to many of us; thank you for sharing!

Razorphish - what the hell - who gave you Shi* - are we in school? OK you failed for plagerism - redo your article and stay after school.

raZor - please friend, not a worry ... often you will see a cut and paste reference submitted for review and consideration.

I liked the thread and would encourage you to make more if you feel inclined.

instead of small print at the bottom in grey letters

Several people here cut and paste articles without attribution. It's not that unusual on forums such as this. For our Mister Fish to get gyp for posting attributed posts is a little out of order, if you ask me.

was anyone really giving him flak?

i remember someone saying

' you should attribute it'

and thats all i remember..

nobody saying 'ban this clod for plagerizing'

and my post above was just a suggestion, as he stated he plans to do this weekly, it would protect him from future 'issues'

Well this is not a school or university essay, so references are less important. But they are useful if we want to research further. At least some people are posting some cool reads. Thanks to Razorphish for his interesting contributions. Keep them coming.....

Again, I think the point is he is angry about being called out on it, rather than being 'right in the ways of school or uni'

nobody is stopping him from posting from other sources, but, he shouldnt be surprised if people continue to call him on it for not citing clearly.. are you going to say that the people who say that he should be citing it (since this isa weekly post) are inthe wrong and shouldnt be allowed to state their opinion?

to defend himself from nonsenselike that, he should cite it clearly, so people are not confused.
oh i give up... til' next week when this comes up again.

Wow, you did the same thing. And I didn't see this either.

When I originally read it, I thought I saw the attribution to the original source or something like it. The funny thing was I KNEW I had seen when Swiss brought up the notion that it wasn't cited and offered the original. When I went back to look at it, TWICE, I couldn't find it and I thought I was crazy. And then I posted a reply asking Phish what was up.

If plagiarism is an issue, just run through a plagiarism checker like they do in school. It's marvelous thing and keeps everyone straight. Google itself is almost a plagiarism checker. :D

Folks we are here to share our ideas and this is the age of the Internet and it's much more common place (as my friend Puggers so eloquently expressed) in our busy lifestyles these days for this to occur. (Opps that statement was courtesy of _____) Take texting for example, the abbreviations and acronyms we use were created by someone, they are ideas and thoughts created by someone like Al Gore. (Name courtesy of Al Gore and Associates) :) I like the fact we can post photos of gen watches stolen from Swiss (Swiss name, Swiss Cheese, and the Alps are property of the Swiss Peeps)factories without reprisal, they should be happy we are giving them free advertising. (Free is a word courtesy of the French Lagniappe)

R2D4 I re-read your post 3 times and am still scratching my head! lol. i think it had something to do with misrepresenting a piece of work as one's own.. being the same thing as posting a picture of a watch. :)

Stolen property perhaps, picture or saying or article. No need to cite in this forum really, this is not a doctor's governing body.

Posting someone else's photograph or written work isn't the issue... it's misrepresenting the work as one's own that's shady. You're right - no need to cite. No need for many things. But if I post a bunch of wrist shots in a wrist check thread and people compliment me on my wonderful watch, and my photography skills.. and I just smile and thank them... wouldn't it be odd if it turned out it was just some pics I found on timezone?

That is what you meant, right? If someone came out and asked, hey did you write that and they said yes I did, the whole thing. That is Plagiarism/steeling, IMHO. Posting it to look like it is yours is misleading but it shouldn't be assumed without asking point blank. Assumptions can be misleading too.

If I were in college and submitted an essay to my professor, he doesn't need to ask if it was my work; it's implied. If someone posts a body of text on a forum without citing the source or being clear about authorship, it is similarly implied that the body of text is the submitter's own work. That is plagiarism. If the plagiarizer is questioned about the authorship and insists that the work is his own, then it is lying as well.

Swiss this isn't college. We are on a Forum. And I do agree on the ownership and citing. Today's online communication is a bit different in that it is less formal. We should agree that the impled therory goes both ways just like Ann Heche. :D Again I totally see your point as you are very good at this debate stuff. ;)

Swiss is kinda right. I mean plagiarizing words is bad. As a writer, I respect other people's words and give credit to them if I know who said it and don't use it if I don't know to whom I should attribute it; or reword it enough such that it becomes my own. Most cases, I'll leave it because some things loose something when you paraphrase.

But I'm okay with a little of my work being attributed to someone else, as long as I get paid for it. I sold a girl in high school a paper that she won a contest with and money. She gave me some and we were cool. College is like that too. English majors make bank! :D
