    Default Buying on RG

My fellow geeks, I have purchased 7 watches on RG from various members with excellent feedback over the last few months, more than 50% of them have undisclosed issues that will need to be fixed. After contacting the various members all to a man have said they did not notice the problems prior to listing and did not disclose these issues in the listings. The problems range from partially stripped screw down crown, chronograph not resetting correctly, loose minute hand, minute and hour hands not lined up correctly. I guess some of these issues could happen in transit particularly hands coming loose or not lined up, however all the items were packaged well except one. I find it hard to believe that prior to listing a watch for sale the seller, particularly RG Geeks on this forum, do not check all the functions to make sure their is no issues and if their are issues then please disclose them in the listing. We are all avid watch geeks and to say you did not notice any issues because you did not check all the functions prior to listing I find to be unacceptable.
I understand it is "Caveat Emptor" or "Let the Buyer Beware" but to have so many issues is really frustrating. In the past I have bought from dealers and also had issues with QC, is it just the nature of the Rep beast? Bro's your thoughts please, Mick.

I've bought good ones and I've bought bad ones.

They're reps- it happens. What has been good about this place so far is everyone comes to a mutually satisfying middle ground at the end of the day (in my experiences- your mileage may vary).

This is why we have feedback, if the watch is not as advertized, and you have a problem getting satisfaction with the seller, get the mods and admins involved, and then leave feedback stating that you needed help in getting the problem cured. I never understand it when members have a problem, get the mods and admins involved, and then you never hear anything else about it (sure, maybe your problem was finally solved, but what about the next buyer??). I think that feedback should always be left, no mater what you buy or sell, and that it should be truthful, if you needed assistance to make it right, say so in the feedback!! Otherwise, how do the rest of us know who to trust, who to maybe avoid, or at least question more closely befor a buy. Just my 2 cents worth anyway..........

Bro's I'm not slagging I'm just frustrated, I think this is a very unusual situation to have 4 out of 7 with issues but to the credit of all the sellers they have all stepped up to the plate and we have reached common ground and I'm cool with that.

It happens, as sfa said, they are reps...sure there might be one or ten people trying to scam you in some way, but that pretty much falls through with good follow-up work.

Then you should still leave good feedback for all these purchases..........

Yeah, they're reps, but they're being sold by self-proclaimed Geeks. Maybe the particular issues "don't bother" the seller, but if they exist, they should be stated.

To read that people won't buy an Omega rep because there are .001" happy feet on the logo that would drive them crazy yet you get 4 out of 7 reps that have obvious problems the seller "never noticed" is IMHO entirely unacceptable.

You'd think there'd be FULL DISCLOSURE amongst fellow Geeks. If not, then those of you who won't disclose should get the "F" out of this group. NOW.
You're not a Geek and you don't belong here.

I agree 100% with you Mick and am too frustrated by the lack of honesty and disclosure some people have when selling reps.

I am have a keen sense of detail about my watches and I know the overwhelming majority of people here do too. It amazes me when I buy a watch from another member and within the first 5 minutes notice something that was not disclosed. Contact the seller to ask about it and...nope, never saw it. I mean that is just BS, we are still spending a decent amount on watches, 300-500, is not cheap.

I guess you just have to buy the seller and not the watch unless there is a really detailed description.

Mick, this is a very unfortunate situation and I absolutely understand your frustration. These are all reps and if you are unhappy or concerned with issues, I think that it is important for you to buy from a trusted dealer with excellent QC or just go gen. If a buyer is honest with his/her sale thread and truly did not notice any "other" issues, perhaps there is a chance that they really did not notice. I can say for myself, that I have bought, sold and traded from day one that I joined RG. I know that my feedback score is low, but there were undocumented sales that all have been excellent.
Some of my past purchases have been great, some sucked, overall I have taken each issue as a grain of salt. I hope that you have success with your issue and have an understanding that they are reps and can be easily fixed.

I understand your frustration, but the fact that they all "stepped up to the plate" and came to a solution you found acceptable makes it seem to me they were not trying to scam you. I don't think most people who try to pull one over on others then go out of their way to make things right. There are all levels of geeks on here, and some are more skilled at noticing certain fine details than others. That being said, I think feedback is key to any system that relies on reputations provided by other buyers. I hope you have better luck in the future

Mostly true, but you have some people that try to take advantage of the situation too! I sent a watch out that was perfect before I shipped it. The second hand has now decided to be 1/2 sec or so off at 12 now. I guess it happened in shipping. Now I look like an as* because of this even though I took pictures of the watch vacuum sealed with the hand in the right position before shipping! I said just send the darn thing back...I will just let it sit in my watch box instead of having to mess with these petty issues. IT IS A USED REP WATCH!!!!Things can happen to them and there is no perfection in them. If they had bought it new they would have to pay for shipping back to China and they would think twice before they do that!

I am just done with selling here. Selling a watch here for less than half the purchase price and then people trying to pick out every little flaw is just not worth it to me!

Selling watches at the local GTG is a much better option I think. At least the buyer can see it in their hand and nego from there!

I think that there will be times when the good old postal system can cause damage, however I am seeing a fair few posts with photos that hide obvious meddling damage (screwdriver scratches etc), or the description fails to list obvious flaws. Honesty will help with the buyers expectations, if you say it is well worn or has a few scuffs here and there, then the buyer will not be shocked and cause a problem later on.

Mickqc - You're right for the most part- From what I have seen, Geeks are some of the most anal and observant regarding subtle nuances - "the crossbar in the A is too high in PANERAI" et cetra" So when you get a watch that has undisclosed issues that is a crock- in defense if somebody sends you a watch and one of the bracelet screws is a little stripped they may not have noticed it if they are flipping their watches that fast- but as far as time keeping ability and the bezel issues - hands lining up, stripped crowns and the such How could a true GEEK NOT know this?
