It doesn't really damage anything else because I don't do it long enough or often enough for damage to happen. You place it inside and then carefully turn it around so that it tans evenly. That's the tricky part. You have to make sure it tans evenly and the color is proper for the area of the bag. You don't want to do any inside pieces because, natch, those places wouldn't patina at the same rate as the rest of the bag. You do the outside and the straps and make sure piping is getting its chance as well. The bottom is obviously not as important to do because that part sees very little sun and air. It should be a little dirty though because you place it on the ground. That's how I do mine.
