Default Opinions on gen, would you? Should you?

So I have been away for awhile and I am buying reps again. However, I have my grail Rolex submariner gen when they were obtainable. Now I see folks spending 3,4,5 thousand dollars on reps... which got me thinking, at what point do you say I will buy a gen? So if you were to spend$1000 on an awesome rep would you just pony up $3500 for a gen (of something)? Just thinking out loud. What say you?

Depends on the rep and the corresponding gen. If I saw a gen sub in decent order for 4k I’d jump at it. There are reps with many gen parts and are sometimes worth it, but I agree they can start to encroach on the lower end of the gen pre-owned price ladder. I don’t think there is any hard and fast rule that you can apply to this question but I personally would be reluctant to part with thousands of dollars or GBP for a rep, regardless of how many gen bits it had – but that’s just me.

Agree wholeheartedly. Although the work that folks are putting into making them as authentic as possible is admirable. I enjoy seeing it.

Hi, for that price differential, absolutely yes, I'd go gen if it was what I wanted.
For me personally, I would spend reasonable $$ on a good rep if the gen was very difficult to get, like you say Rolex, Patek etc
