Good day, fellow rep enthusiasts. I'm a newcomer here, and fairly new to the world of reps in general. I found this site through extensive Googling, and am quite grateful to you all for providing such an extensive information base here.
I came to the world of reps after realizing that a gen was not what I wanted after all. I'm too fond of variety, too enamoured of the different models out there for purchase, and frankly, I'm not careful enough to feel entirely sanguine with a four-figure work of art on my wrist. Yet, I love the craftsmanship and detail that goes into the upper echelons of watchmaking, and admit that I love the idea of wearing a watch that's a work of art, that was built with an artist's hand and eye.
Reps are the perfect answer to this need, I think. The artistry that goes into creating the image of the gen captures the same love of beauty that inspired the gen itself, and many reps are excellent watches in their own right, worthy timepieces exactly as they are, for what they are. For the same reason I bought a lovely Frederic Church print for my guest room rather than the original, I buy reps: I want something that captures the beauty of the original, in a format appropriate for its intended place and use.
My rep collecting began with an ETA-based anniversary edition Sub. Its bezel is too dark, I think, but it's a solid and attractive watch just the same. I was quite impressed by the eye to detail, the cleanness of the crown detailing, the light-catching qualities of the sapphire and the beautiful sweep of the second hand. While my first Sub is certainly imperfect to its inspiration, it remains a really handsome watch, and I'm pleased with it.
I have a number of others on the way, including a black/black ETA-based SS Sub from M (thank you again!), and a lovely silver Serti from another source, as well as the black-banded Planet Ocean. I also have a passel of junker Subs I've been given as a gift, to sort through and check out. I'm curious to see just what they're like.
I admit, I'm interested in reps as tributes, not as 1:1 photo likenesses (except in relation to them being tributes), so once I begin sharing reviews, please bear in mind that I tend to be overly complimentary and forgiving; I'm interested in the variances in workmanship and the nuances of the different craftsfolk who build them. Rather like a "cover tune," you might say; I enjoy examining what the new artist saw as key to represent about the source of inspiration.
I'm in the US, retired now, an amateur audio engineer and open-source evangelist (I promise not to preach that love of mine here, just my love of reps). I really look forward to getting to know you, and thank you for this magnificent resource!
