    Default Sales threads

Why do sellers post in their sales thread that the item(s) is on hold pending payment or anything like that? That, to me, tells interested parties that they shouldn't even bother to PM the seller and express a desire to purchase the item.

There are so many flakes here who back out of deals or never respond after their initial PM expressing interest.

Just a humble suggestion to sellers -- If you receive an offer or expression of interest, work out the deal, and THEN close the thread as SOLD. And if you don't end up making a deal, then no one knows that a deal went sour.

There's no reason to post a "on hold" or "sold pending funds" in a sales thread. If you want to BUMP your thread, then bump it.

I like what Matt is saying. There are a lot of flakes (or shady sellers), so don't assume you have a done deal until the money is in the bank, and the watch is in the mail.

Personally, when I see a watch that I want, even if it says "On Hold" or "Pending Payment" I always still send a PM...just incase. I cant tell you how many of my "just incase" PM's wound-up in me buying a watch!

Because if someone shows interest in buying an item I am selling, I think the morally right thing to do is to give them a fair chance to buy, rather than sell it from under them if someone else comes along waving cash under my nose.

When selling on forums, I tend to set a limit of 24 hours. Beyond that, it goes back for sale.

um, yea, i also dont like getting 10pms and having to say 'sorry, im waiting for so and so to pay'

if i give someone my paypal address, and someone else asks about it, i dont want to have to deal with getting 2 payments, so once i give out PP, its theirs. til they either dont pay, or they do.

kook -- He who has cash at the ready and pays right away gets the goods. I'm not inferring that a seller lead a potential buyer astray, however, there's no reason to post a "ON HOLD" post in a sales thread. This may deter other potential buyers, and as flakey as some of us geeks are, the seller is shooting himself in the foot by posting such a message in his sales thread.

rofl -- If you're the seller and you've received a PM from a potential buyer asking for payment details, then you shouldn't reply to any of the other interested parties until after about 24 hours with no reply from the original buyer or until you've received payment from the original buyer. After that, then you can either reply to the other potential buyers individually or solve the sales thread as SOLD, which will let the other folks know the item is no longer for sale.

Sheesh! What's so hard here, folks? From a seller's prospective, I just think it's at the seller's detriment to post a "ON HOLD" or "PENDING SALE" post in a sales thread. After all, it's not over til the fat lady sings.

matt, are you saying that a seller can reneg on a previous agreement (on hold) if he gets a better offer before the onhold buyer pays? Sorry if this sounds confusing, must have been the patrons, or the redigaffi, or....

ed -- I'm not saying a seller should reneg; I'm merely asking why a seller feels compelled to post "ON HOLD" in the sales thread simply because a potential buyer has emailed/PM'd the seller asking for payment details or has written that he (buyer) will send payment.

The seller should wait until AFTER funds have been received to post anything like a "ON HOLD" or "PAYMENT PENDING" in the sales thread.

Of course, bumps or price reductions or the addition of items included should be posted, but why do sellers feel compelled to post a blow-by-blow account fo the selling process?

I for one think that a "blow-by-blow update on the selling process" is a nice gesture towards everyone who is really interested in the item. From the buyers perspective, little is worse than not knowing what is happening with a sales thread, especially when you're interested in another item being offered and can afford only one. I've been through this several times: in response to a PM sent to express my interest in an otherwise "empty" sales thread, I get something like "sold already", or "on hold" SEVERAL HOURS LATER! In the meantime, decisions had to be made that might not have been because you were waiting for an answer to your PM or the thread to be updated.

Sending PMs and not publicly stating you did so is also wrong IMO.

Why does it matter if a member sends a PM and doesn't post that he did in the sales thread?

What does it matter what's "going on" in a sales thread from the seller's perspective? Should the seller also post that he's thinking of selling to a member but hasn't made up his mind? Should a seller post that he ate beans and franks for dinner whilst viewing his PM inbox? Yeah, of course, a seller should close the thread when the item is paid for; that isn't the topic of this thread. The topic of the thread is why do some sellers post that they've received a PM from another member and that the potential buyer has expressed interest in buying it and/or that a potential buyer has said that he will send payment? This shouldn't matter to any other potential buyers; they should send a PM to the buyer to get in line if the original buyer backs out AND it may discourage other potential buyers from PMing the seller if the seller posts that a potential buyer has expressed interest.

Maybe it's a good thing when sellers post "On hold pending payment from so-and-so". That way, less of a chance that 'so-and-so' will flake out! Too many flaky window-shopping buyers who disappear when it's time to send payment..
