Reading Posh's comments, she clearly has a good sense of fashion and style for men. Personally, I'm the opposite of Jackjo - I spend more on clothes and less on watches. Here are a few photos of me wearing one of my suits - Canali suit, simple white cotton dress shirt (just a Calvin Klein), and a Hillary Radley tie. Still need to bring the suit to my tailor as the fit around my shoulders needs additional work.

Here's me trying to look deliberately like an evil corporate person (did this for fun - not usually like this)

Uh no. I don't need a Tailgate-esque scandal on my hands. I like my selective anonymity.

Nice suit, Jose. Looks very smart.

    McQueen was such an Icon.

from his films to his fashion....he'll be tough to match.

didn't realize he was such a "humanitarian", giving as much as he did to his former boys home. very kind of him. too bad when I was growing up, he wasn't known as such. just the womanizing, drug using, race car driver that made a few decent films.

    cheers to the great mini-biography.

arn't you supposed to be prepping for your world tour? arn't the rest of the Spices getting back together?

My favourite was "The Great Escape". A great ensemble cast in that movie, but McQueen was terrific in it.

While I liked Steve McQueen, my favourite actor of an earlier era is Cary Grant. "North by Northwest", "Notorious" and "To Catch a Thief" are a few of my favourites....

Don't you keep track of my moves at Poshwatch.com? The tour is over and we got back together early last year! It was may-juh coup for all us, especially me. Because in the Spice Girls beginnings it was about Ginger. But not anymore.

You really ought to think about getting the flux capacitor on your DeLorean fixed . . .

Anyway, Kirk, everybody has a softer side. McQueen groomed a certain image but a lot of people, like Victoria Beckham, prefer to do good works with a minimum of press.

Thank you so much, Spammy! I appreciate the thanks. Hardest part of putting it together? Organizing and sifting through all those McQueen pictures. Gosh!

Posh seriously you should really be writing for GQ, your insight is amazing. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Reading this reminded me of a similar style guru from the Dominican Republic my home town.

He was linked romantically to Dolores Del Rio, Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Soraya Esfandiary, Veronica Lake, Kim Novak, and Eva Peron. He dallied with his ex-wife Flor during his marriage to Doris Duke, and with Zsa Zsa Gabor during his marriage to Barbara Hutton. He was named a co-respondent in at least two divorces, the husbands charging adultery.

He married Danielle Darrieux on September 18, 1942. Duke (whom he married on September 1, 1947), and Hutton (whom he divorced just 53 days after their December 30, 1953 wedding) made him wealthy: Duke gave him $500,000, a stable of polo ponies, several sports cars, and a converted B-25 bomber, and gave him a 17th Century house in Paris in the divorce settlement; Hutton bought him a coffee plantation in the Dominican Republic, another B-25, and paid him a reported $3.5 million in their settlement. His last marriage was at age 56 in 1965 to then-19-year-old French actress Odile Rodin, which lasted until his death by crashing his Ferrari while speeding near his home in Paris.

Ahh Steve McQueen. Probably the single best example of less is more and understated simplicity.

What a fantastic write up POSH! I'm a little upset you left out Bullit, Cincinnati Kid and The Towering Inferno (my favs behind Magnificent Seven), but since the article was so magnificent I can forgive these oversights.

I do have a little food for thought...

Isn't trying to emulate McQueen's look going against McQueen's whole style? I mean, his coolness/sexiness/beauty came from within. We are talking about a guy who became an icon for being nothing more then himself. A simple man who enjoyed the simple things in life. One of his famous quotes is about rather not being in a city (the exact quote escapes me at the moment), too complicated and hectic?

McQueen's clothes looked good because he made them look good. Granted alot of what you mention about tailoring/lines/etc... have significant roles, but without McQueen's attitude, spirit and even posture he would have been nothing. It is the man that makes the clothes, not the clothes that make the man.

I mention these films int he paragraph below the photo of him standing next to his Ferrari Lusso.

Wheat Thin, emulating McQueen's style exactly would be the antithesis of being stylish. That's why I said emulating elements of his style and then using that as a catapult to developing your own style is what you should do. I mention this in the paragraph above the photo of him standing next to his Ferrari Lusso.

That's what I hope all the guys get from this, that the confidence of the individual is part of that but there's no escaping the fact that the clothes help.

My intention wasn't for you to pick my post apart... now I have to explain....

"More memorable films..." is where I would have liked to see my favs, but like I said.. no big deal!

"Part II of this column is all about getting his look, from the watch to jeans to suits" is what I was referring to in regards to the McQueen style emualtion.

Oh, Wheat Thin, I wasn't lashing out at you! Really!

In Part II, I help get a bit of his look by using the brands or cuts of suit that he also used.

And if Steve McQueen ever wore $1,500 Dsquared jeans with his name on them, he must've had a time machine . . . Laugh out loud!

Another tour de force from our resident style mayven.

Steve McQueen was just one tick ahead of me in time.
Baby boomer heros were Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight ( father of the serene Anjelina Jolie ), Sharon Tate, Mia Farrow. Nonetheless we both breathed the same rarified air of the sixties.

Really, to me at the time, Steve was old. Newman was old. Anyone over thirty was old as the catchphrase of the flower children was " don't trust anyone over thirty."

Importantly in the age of HAIR, McQueen and Newman were " follically challenged " in spite of the genius ministrations of Jay Sebring, hair stylist to the stars and boyfriend of Sharon Tate.
Jay, along with Sharon, Folger coffee heiress Abigail Folger and Voytek Frykowski ( busom buddy of the happily absent Roman Polanski ) met his fate one hot summer night on Cielo Drive, Los Angeles, at the hands of a rag tag band of misfit robots carrying out Charlie Manson's ( deus ex garbage can ) hairbrained scheme for ruling the world.

I digress. Steve did not have movie star hair. (JFK Jr., for example, had movie star hair.)
He did have great style, though, and at least on screen carried the banner of that sleek style through the messiest non-style era in our Country's history. He faltered in the end, though, adopting the style of the much younger, chasing eternal youth, a losing proposition.

He married super-starlet Ali McGraw fresh from her success in 'Love Story.' He got fat, hung around with the Hell's Angels ( kind of cool then. Not cool now ) and ( gasp ! ) grew a beard. N.B.: Beards do not make an aging man look cool. They make him look old....like Grampa.

All that aside, in his time he was something.

Clothes : His image was working class ( aside from "The Thomas Crown Affair ) where a lot of fashion percolates upward.
You were aware that you liked his clothes and made mental notes, but like all really well dressed people, nothing drew attention to itself.
He did most of 'Bullitt" in a black tutleneck and suede desert boots...and a shoulder holster. The car is the star in that movie.

In ' Love With the Proper Stranger ' his image is again working class.
Paired with the incomparable Natalie Wood ( that girl could ACT ), he's seen in a series of skinny suits and skinny ties and a Burburry trenchcoat.
As Rocky Papazanno, an on-the-make saxaphone player from the Bronx, clothes aren't important here. What is important is that here is the McQueen as he really was. Scrappy and tough, inside is a tender heart and that is his allure. He can love and he is loveable for it.

'Thomas Crown' shows him in a deluxe setting, an elite world of all the fine things, cars and clothes that money can buy and this was really his last blockbuster film.
Paired nicely with Faye Dunaway ( another classy act up from the working class ), he's at his icy best in a game of cat and mouse with Faye.

In Posh's off the set shots, he's wearing a classic that most of us had, the Irish Fisherman's sweater. Again, in the poor boy hat and glasses, he's wearing really the ne plus ultra sweater, the Dean's cable. These were pricy as hell, sold ONLY at the very best men's shops and were fragile and delicate. They were a true status symbol and the more of them you had, the more colors, the better.

There was a famous shot of him dancing the Watusi with President Lyndon Johnson's daughter, Luci at the White House.

He died at 50, too young. I think it's something of a failure to die young. You didn't survive. But maybe it's best he died young because he really hadn't been Steve McQueen for a long time.

Thanks for reading and enjoying, Norm! Steve McQueen loved to dress up or down or around. And you're right: he WAS looking pretty good in comparison to what was passing as style at that time. But even though he was anti-establishment, the establishment paid his salary and he knew that. So he was sure to do any dirt on the down low and try not to thumb his nose at them too much.

He really lived life and the clothes he wore, on-screen and off, reflected all the facets of his life and his personality. That's one of the best things about him for me. That and Thomas Crown because I just LOVE that movie.

It's funny you mention that night that at Cielo Drive. Steve McQueen was SUPPOSED to be at that slumber party, ya know, drinkin', druggin' and listenin' to music with the rest of them but couldn't make it. After that event, he carried for the rest of his life.
