Default They Won't Leave in the Night: Diamonds Are ForNEVER!

Shirley Bassey sure said it best. They WON'T leave in the night unless they're stolen!

You can buy replicas of a lot of different things in all levels of quality, accuracy of appearance and performance. Some things never quite live up to the look of the original like, for instance, a replica of a Ferrari. And some replicas, like the faux Rolex Daytona, do not perform like the original. In both analogies, I feel nothing but the genuine will do. But not every replica item has shortcomings; some can be 100% identical to the genuine article in most all measurable ways.

Not to get too political in this forum, but I believe certain items I really don't need (or want) the authentic version of due to what I feel the item itself, the company marketing the item or the socio-enviro implications surrounding the item represent. The diamond is the perfect example of one of those items I cannot conscientiously purchase. But some replica items are much easier to live with financially and socially; often times in this cold, cruel world, that's a blessing.

This pictures says in French: "What price for those diamonds?"

I suggest a reading of this article by Edward Epstein that was published in The Atlantic; it's very well known and has been referenced by others and tells exactly how a very plentiful stone that can be easily chipped, shattered, discolored or burned got the aura that now surrounds it. The diamond mythos and advertising I have a problem with just on general principle but my concerns lie much more in the realm of human rights violations perpetrated for mere rocks. There really is no real way to be completely sure a diamond is conflict-free unless you saw it being mined and watched it until it hit Harry Winston. But thanks to science and technology you can be sure your bling hasn't really hurt a thing!

Being a good hypocrite, I salivate over the one thing I simply can't bring myself to actually buy: a real diamond. I love that sparkle. I love that fire. I love that scintillation as the light hits it. It's truly a beautiful thing that really is a joy to simply look at and behold. Unfortunately, for DeBeers and N.W. Ayers, I don't think a diamond tells me how much I'm loved. Rocks can't do that. But I do think it's a nice gift for almost anyone. Not everybody wants a diamond but for those that do, I'm going to focus on what I feel may be the best choices.

Betterthandiamond.com's Cartier 1895 Engagement set in Palladium. Completely guilt-free:

I like looking at the baubles, socially responsible baubles , online and came across this site called Betterthandiamond.com; I regularly read their forum to stay current with jewelry trends, enjoying the multitude of pictures and rings which are magnificent. The girls and guys over there know simulants, synthetics and cultured stones like the guys and girls here know crown guards and rehaut! And they are super friendly and helpful, just like everyone here. The site also sells many other cultured stones, including to-die-for Alexandrite, in addition to their Asha simulant. Mother Earth is weeping but not because she's being strip mined for jewelry. They're tears of joy because this is more environmentally sound!

I reached the Asha simulant site a long time ago while looking into something I heard about called "cultured diamonds" (more on them later). The site goes into greater detail than I can but essentially they are using high-quality cubic zirconias that have a layer of real diamond bonded into the upper substrate of the stone, giving the stone optical properties that are more in line with a real diamond, and depending on the quality of the real diamond, it can be better. The hardness is improved, the brilliance is improved and since the amorphous diamond is infused into the stone's top layers, the stone does not cloud like traditional a diamond simulant when exposed to water and air. I had no idea that plain old water and air is what caused this in CZs. Just washing your hands or breathing on the stone to shine it on your shirt can start the degradation process! The whole process they use on the Asha to prevent this has a patent pending and I really hope they get it.

The stones themselves look stunning and as close to gen as physically possible without being the real thing with the cost. Take a look:

The stones are sold loose or mounted in different settings before they are sent out to people.

But for those who have to have a real diamond for fear of offending someone unimportant you don't know who might care, there's two companies selling fancy colored diamonds that sell for less per carat than mined diamonds, and can never be called out, not in the traditional sense of that phrase anyway. The industry has coined the term 'cultured diamonds' for these stones. They are completely molecularly identical to mined diamonds; this means they have the same physical, optical and chemical properties as their natural counterparts. They cannot be told apart from their natural brethren, which worries the devil out of DeBeers. But the good news is they can also use these in the advancement of science.

Gemesis, using technology (DeBeers wanted the machines that could make diamonds to stay suppressed) gained from the Russia after the fall of Communism, makes diamonds. They are partnered with some of the best designers in the business. And they offer some pieces that are magnificent and most times no more expensive than a genuine Omega! Take a look:

    And this:

Apollo Diamond also makes cultured diamonds and can do custom work as well. They are using a different technology than Gemesis to achieve their stones. And unlike Gemesis, Apollo uses their stones for industrial applications as well. They are very adamant about the technology being used not just for pretty bling but also for applications to advance science which is definitely conscious and benefits everybody. Their jewelry work looks like this:

    And like this:

I would show pictures of the other side of their business but I can't get pics of their single crystal diamond wafers and diamonds they use for optoelectronics and nanotechnology. I have a feeling it would anticlimactic anyway.

As an aside, a lot of the jewelry above is set in Palladium which is a noble white metal in the same family with platinum. Palladium offers all the benefits of platinum without the drawbacks, like cost. It is easier to mold than platinum because it has a specific density closer to that of gold, which means it is no where near as heavy as platinum (but you still get that feeling of 'heft' due to it's density being higher than stainless steel). For those who look to white gold for their platinum appearance needs, there is another great benefit to palladium over white gold: no yearly rhodium platings! Everyone knows that to keep white gold looking white it is plated with rhodium, coincidentally it is from the same family of metals that which platinum and Palladium belong and that is why white gold has a platinum-esque appearance. The problem with that is the rhodium rubs off very quickly over time and if you want the item to continue looking white, you must constantly get it replated. Palladium, which depending on the commodities markets, costs about the same as 18k gold at any given time is a natural, no-brainer choice for white precious metals. And it is being used everywhere now in jewelry and watches.

In regards to watches, Palladium was used for a line by Cartier recently (that completely sold out) and Ulysse Nardin; both companies plan to use the metal more and more. You get the heft associated with gold, the feel and look of platinum without the price and no one's the wiser. I believe that's apropos to repping in general!

    Here's the Cartier:

    Here's the Ulysse Nardin:

It doesn't take much to do your part to save the world, even in little ways like this! You have on replica clothes, carry a replica bag and wear a replica watch. I suppose a replica or cultured diamond is the next logical choice. I hope this is informative. Comments or questions are always welcome.

Thanks for the thoughtful write-up. Diamonds bore me to tears. The process of upgrading my wife's wedding a few ago almost killed me. "Clarity this." "Color that."

But she loves them. I'll send her the link and see what she thinks.

    Thanks again.
Sue Lor: All the people in this house are very traditional. Number one: never touch a Hmong person on the head. Not even a child. The Hmong people believe that the soul resides on the head, so don't do that.
Walt Kowalski: Well... Sounds dumb, but fine.
Sue Lor: Yeah, and a lot of Hmong people consider looking someone in the eye to be very rude! That's why they look away when you look at them.
    Walt Kowalski: Yeah. Anything else?
Sue Lor: Yeah... some Hmong people tend to smile or grin, when they're yelled at. It's a cultural thing, it expresses embarrassment or insecurity. It's not that they're laughing at you or anything.
Walt Kowalski: Right, you people are nuts.

    Very interesting info Posh.

I would imagine that the cultured diamond industry is worth a huge amount of money.

You know, no matter how good a 'replica' they make, be it diamonds or watches, some people will always lust after the gens.

Great write up. As a part time jewelry designer for my wife, I think I can use some of this stuff .

    Insightful as always. Well done.

The bezel set engagement ring is identical to the ring I gave my wife.

After seeing "Blood Diamond" though, we've been considering going with something more conscious. I think you've given me something to consider.

    Thank you.

You know, it's still in its infancy. They are up against a behemoth like the DeBeers which has what will be close to 100 years worth of advertising and Pink Floyd's The Wall-style brainwashing to combat. It'll be tough. People aren't used to thinking critically or finding things out for themselves.

I have a friend who I tried to explain this subject to her who said basically said she didn't care how the diamond got to her or who it may have hurt in the process, she just wanted one. And I thought,"Who would want a person who thinks like this for a wife?"

http://www.diamond-essence.com/site/default.asp has some really nice stones as well. Not cultured but simulant- they don't go cloudy like traditional CZ. I really like their green stones- almost as much as I like my cultured emerald rings (I have a thing for platinum and emeralds and I LOVE all things green!)

I'm not a diamond guy, neither is the wife. I've seen firsthand some of the depredations of forced mining in West Africa and it is by no means pretty. Don't wish to be associated with either that or paying ridiculously inflated prices for sparkly Kingsford briquettes.

That's kinda the reason I wrote this. Socially conscious diamond (or diamond simulant) purchases that coincides with our love for all things replica. Look like a million for under $19.95!

O M G. I may have only been here a few weeks, but Posh is simply incredible!!! AMAZING writing style, covers the gambit of subjects knowing and quoting the important details each and every time, and don't tell me your not at least a little more curious about the woman behind the avatar with each and every one!

I'm a single white male, and it might not be a popular view... but I think THIS ring the Posh mentioned above is STUNNING, just like the Cartier 1895 she mentions at the top, and if this ring is available as a rep... I might just buy it and wear it. I think it's that amazing...

As for the serious side of this article, I must admit... I don't know too much about it. I bought Blood Diamond on HD-DVD after a co-worker recommended it. I'm not a huge Leo DeCraprio fan, but I gotta admit most of his movies have been great. And Blood Diamond was no different, especially since the gentleman from Gladiator who's name I'm forgetting (my apologies... he's AMAZING!!!) helped make the movie. I can truely say I agree that the atrocities in diamonds should NOT be ignored, and who could live with themselves if they knew a diamond they bought was a result of death? Unbelieveable.

In closing, I feel the need to say it again. Sylar... you are the MAN. Amazing site. Incredible members. Terrific Input. Simply the most impressed I've been with a web site in a LONG, LONG time. Today I just had to try and keep up from work, even though I'd be better served doing my job and staying away. But there is something magical here, and I hope it stays that way.

Best wishes to all, and to all... a good night!

I understand you concern for the africans negatively affected by the blood diamond trade..but where is you concern for child labor in china...probably many of our reps are manufactured by children working in sweat shops? I don't really see a difference do you?

Don't get me wrong, I dont really care what they do in other countries...I was just asking the question

Great stuff, Posh! I'm a big fan of cultured diamonds....just wish there were more of them available in precious metals instead of silver with the rhodium plating. I have bought a few rings of white gold with cultured stones, but definitely would like more variety. I guess that will come with time.

    Let me first address Mason.

Mason, I'm afraid that a lot of things we buy are made in conditions that would be considered substandard by people who are not of legal age to go potty by themselves let alone work in a grimy factory. I feel helpless sometimes that I can't save the entire world (and believe me I want to try).

And do you really think a small child is making all those Panerai and Breguet replicas? I have an idea, you bring me a five year-old with hands steady enough to work on watches and I'll open a factory.

My post stated at the end that I you may not be able to do everything I want in regards to saving the world but I can start somewhere and for me my starting point is on the little luxuries in which I have more control over what my money supports. This isn't even asking people not to drive cars to work or carpool to save money and gas. This is not buying a complete non-necessity to make life better for someone else somewhere else, in some way.

If a warlord in Gambia cannot buy more guns with the diamonds he's laundering via a broker, circumventing the so-called Kimberley Process which is suppose to make sure diamonds are mined and sold ethically, to get into to Canada to sell as conflict-free, I've done something. And if writing my post to educate others so they don't buy a diamond (or at least consider what buying one means!), I've done even more indirectly.

Eskie, Merk, Razor and Handler thank you for your kind words! Merk, let me offer you a site that actually makes the type of ring in that photo but does it for less, depending on metal. That artisan is Peter Kangas Design.

Peter Kangas' designs are simply magnificent. He works in all metals including Palladium, platinum, titanium and tungsten carbide. He's VERY busy but the pieces he makes are astounding and he doesn't mind working with any stones, including synthetics, simulants and naturals. This is some of his work:

Very luscious designs and he does completely custom work and some of it is affordable for lots of people.

Thanks for the reply most people just ignore me.

The problem with your argument IMH is that diamonds are not the only cause of the wars in Africa. Africa is a mess and its not because of diamonds...the Hootu or Tootsies (cant remember who killed who - it doesnt matter because the other side would have done the same eventually) killed 1 million people in a week using machetes; not guns from the diamond trade.

In Nigeria it's oil and in Darfur its something else...if the civilized world stopped buying diamonds the africans would find other reasons to kill themselves. Good luck with your quest to save the world!

Also please be considerate to members like Dave...he"ll probably lose all sorts of sleep worrying about his blood diamond bling

I don't believe Posh is saying that Africa is a mess BECAUSE of the diamond trade, just that the artifically inflated prices of diamonds allow already (and historically) warring ethnic clans to kill each other in a more orderly, efficient manner. In addition, the purchase of weapons allows the practice of child soldiers to continue to flourish in sub-Saharan Africa.

Granted, more people in Africa are killed with edged weapons (as in the rest of the world- i.e. more people are killed manually, hands/feet/bludgeoned, than are shot in the US) but what the "illegal" diamond sales do is allow the purchase of modern weapons.

Using the proceeds of the diamond sales, the local warlord goes and buys some old, beat to hell Kalashnikovs, gives them to 10-14 year old boys and tells them they are in the "army". As any street cop will tell you a teen will kill you a LOT quicker than an adult- the resasoning process is absent- no thought for consequences of actions. Said warlord then tells these children to go raid the next village over.

An "army" of pre-teens with Kalashnikovs and PKMs is a danger to those who are unarmed. An "army" of pre-teens with sticks and knives is not.

Those living in sub-Saharan Africa will ALWAYS find ways to kill one another on a Biblical scale. Mixing ethnicities in a highly tribal continent is a massive mistake the colonial powers made. The damage is done however, but I do not feel the need to toss fuel onto an already burning situation when there are alternatives out there- ones which also happen to be far more economical.
