We have a buncha' similar homes in my city that were actually built DURING WWII to house military. Many of them were subsequently sold and "restored" (you know, updated with all new crap), but there are a few that were restored to original state (all wood mouldings stripped of paint & re-stained, brickwork tuck-pointed, etc.).
It's the way it should be.

While not my dream home, my current place comes with a similar story in that we were picked by the owners because we wanted to raise our family in the house (the other bidders were either retired or had no family plans).
Sometimes things DO work out (we had viewed over 25 houses with an agent before tripping over ours FSBO by lucky happenstance).

I can visualize that faux brick (?) garage in your back yard being replaced by the real thing at some point...

Oh, that's great! But what you saw is exactly what I saw at the first placed I looked. The original wood floors in the entry hall and central hallway had been replaced by tile (!), a nice tile but tile nonetheless. The kitchen had no oriinal cabinetry whatsoever. It was brand new Royal Cabinets (from your neck-of-the-woods) but it was just out of place in that house. The knobs were new on the doors and there was an addition that served as a laundry room. It was a beatiful house, yes, but the details that are in my house were missing or incomplete. I have moldings aound every dooor and window in my house. The baseboards throughout are 11". There was nothing like that in that house's renovation.

The garage has shingle-type stuff on it that is covering the clapboards, which were actually nice from what I peeked at underneath. I guess it was a rage like all that formstone in Baltimore. LOL

Oh god. I'm back after 2 years for 4 days and the big red type appears.

Thanks, Chris. I'm scared to make a mistake and then mess something up. I feel less like a homeowner and more like a steward sometimes.

However, I plan on making it as cozy and inviting as possible. What works better? A merry-go-round or a vibrating bed?
