"sausage" dial refers to the way the luminescent hour markers are applied... Different dials for different models/years. The lume is just painted on top of the dial and not sandwiched between the layers.. Upclose in super macro pics, the sausage dial hour markers look like little... well... sausages laying on the dial. 
its just the lumpy look to the lume.
