Petition to Rename Repgeek to Repsnobs?
Has anyone noticed or even care that RG seems really hostile and snobbish of late...
GAWD forbid some newb asks about something without searching... Lynchmob immediately steps in and starts sarcastic rants about the search button not working..
OR... Someone asks about what the best 1:1 reps are at the moment.... Flame war... How can you ask that, and how can you expect a rep to be gen like... Blah blah if you can't accept faults then don't buy reps....argggggg
Or someone asks for assistance on Qc pictures, etc and gets told that they are called QC Queens and that TD don't like them and that they are bad for the rep industry?
Personally, I like to chit chat about which reps I currently think are the best and most gen like.... And if I walk past an Ad I study the gens in the window and compare them to my reps... Sometimes I pick up tiny things like the hour hand sitting just a fraction to close on the dial compared to the Gen, I come home and adjust my rep and it feels like a massive improvement (seamaster 300)....
If we don't knit pick and highlight the differences between reps and gens then we will never have had the advances we see in the current releases... I'm more excited about the future quality of reps than gens and with new technology and 3d manufacturing it's going to be so exciting in the future...I would even say that the rep game is forcing the advancement of the the gen game because reps are so amazing now.. And the gen factories need to push ahead...
Sometimes people ask stupid questions but the answers from really knowledgeable people or simply other perspectives are truly interesting and enlightening, and I enjoy reading and hearing it....
What I'm trying to say is that I very often find some members are real snobs and need to cheer up and stop being so damn Not fun.

I say YOU stand at the front door of RG and greet all the noobs and answer ALL their questions, especially those that ask the same question in 14 different threads, four different ways and still don't get it.

Did you see the post from the young lady asking for advice on rep suggestions.... It was probably the most polite and gentile friendly and chatter thread on the RG forum...in like Forever.... If I was a Noob looking for help here I'd fake a new profile with super hot avatar and female persona and act like a Noob asking advice to buy the most gen like super rep OTB 1:1 best submariner for my "brother" and I bet id get a 10000000 super helpful replies...

I accept that from time to time a new member will join, most likely get lazy after reading four threads and post a question about who has the best Sub or which is the best super rep.
It happens and now and again I think, is fine.
We will I am sure, all club together and offer whatever help we can.
But recently there have been far too many people joining, blatantly not even bothering to spend the time searching for an answer (or even advise and reasons for that advise) within those threads, that many learned and experienced members have contributed, so that they might actually learn in return.
We have all been there but yes, I do get fed up repeating the same advise and I know it is there, for people who can be bothered to look.
That is how I find information on anything I am not sure about.
I enjoy and gain far more wisdom and experience from reading up and researching, than simply asking a question that I know has been asked a thousand times before.
There was even a lengthy thread that addressed the various super reps from the respective factories, not that long ago and I am sure, had they bothered to look, they would have found it and gained a great deal more from it.
We all started somewhere but the search facility is there to help.
If the answers are not within the millions of threads, then of course ask the question.

Very true. The recent threads from one particular member come to mind. He was given the answer over and over again and members explained in great detail but he opened thread after thread which rolex is best, which sub is best, which of these 2 is best. He didn't bother to read the responses, he just wanted a link and an answer. The next question would be which dealer, which shipping method, what do you think about my QC pics. Mention rehaut, LEC, 3135, 2824, crown guard, endlink fitment and so on. It flies over their heads because they've done zero research.

That's the point. No one's needs an update on what you ordered. How excited you are about it. How you had to change your underwear after the TD accepted your payment. It's common sense. Sometimes I think rep forum attract mutants.

Not just happening on Repgeek. Most of the forums (different subjects) on the net that I frequent are all like this. If the same questions have been asked and answered many many times people get frustrated with those same questions.
-
Actually I think the problem is self correcting...anything of disinterest is most often ignored. Anyone looking to stack a body count is removed.

Totally. I remember how hard it was for me in the beginning to understand all the terms and names used on RG all the time ("cartel watches; marlin case" etc.) It takes time and patience to get this new language and I think this is what's missing with some of the new members. I find our Forum still friendly and welcoming to genuine watch fans. No worries here.

Same here. The tenor usually changes over time, although I've always found RepGeek to be much friendlier than RWI (which is why I don't think I've ever bothered to post there).
Granted, I still can't tell most Rolexes (aside from the Cellini) or AP RO/ROO's apart, but I learn a bit about them each time I read stuff on them here (and am not forced to search every other abbreviation or acronym).

Correct. Many forums different topics have similar issues. I participate in cycling forums, ducati owners, etc, nothing as bad as here though... Much friendlier I think.
