Default Who needs gen looking docs?

I’m often puzzled by the occasional request for gen looking papers, warranty cards and occasionally a gen looking case for rep watches.
What are they for? Why would anyone want them?
Do the purchasers of these items walk around in public with the papers displayed around their necks, or perhaps stuck to their forehead?

OK, the box I can understand – sort of. At the end of the day it’s great to put your Rolex (Other brands available) into a nice case. I have a gen one myself (case that is), but I didn’t buy it, it was something that I acquired when the retail jewellery company that I worked for closed down its head office.
But as for the documents, who sees them other than the owner?
I think that most of us on this forum would not think of trying to deceive any potential buyers by producing these papers as gen, thereby suggesting that the rep they were selling was in fact also gen.

So, I’m really curious as to what incentive motivates the acquisition of these items. Have I missed something obvious? Do the owners take them out of their filing cabinet and look at them lovingly for a few minutes and then place them back?

The watch you would want to be as close to the gen as possible, I think everyone gets that. It feels great to have a close approximation of the genuine article on your wrist as you walk around town; and if others see it and assume it’s the genuine article, well that’s not our fault.
Perhaps the owners of these paper pretences carry them on their person so that if they get called out, they swiftly dive into their rep Pierre Cardin wallet and flash them in front of their accuser saying ‘What you say to that mate!’
To which the answer will probably be ‘They are fake too, so put ‘em back into your fake wallet.’

Perhaps I’m being a little harsh on my fellow forum members, for which I apologize in advance. But I’m genuinely curious; what is the point of it?

You could also ask why people wear fake watches at all. You want to make your surroundings believe
that you are a rich and successful person. The real problem is not the watches you wear, but the people who wear them.

Nobody will be able to tell for sure that it is a fake watch at a distance of just one metre. But a person who can't
afford an expensive real watch with a high degree of certainty will be recognized at a much greater distance.

It is the appearance of the person, his style, his movement, his language.

If that does not fit, then no apparently expensive watch will help. And certainly no forged papers.

You can wear a fake watch without hesitation if you can buy the same watch as a real one at any time.

Yes, I think we all understand that and it has been said before, but that's a different topic.

    Hi Grape shot,

Iv'e got a few gens, and a few reps, I don't try to pass any reps off as gen, quite the opposite, I enjoy showing how good the rep is to genuine at a fraction of the cost, not to mention availability. I am on the waiting list for 2 Rolex at the moment, might not live long enough to ever having one on the wrist, but if i am lucky in life then the kids will reap the benefit of my addiction .As to paper work, load of toilet roll in my opinion.

    regards Andy G.

I’m not interested in this aspect of rep collecting personally. But, as a hobbyist and collector, I can see the appeal of collecting other things around the subject. For me, it’s taken the route of tinkering with and working on the watches, and buying tools and accessories to do so. Other collectors might see this as odd, and all they want to do is wear their pieces and put them away in authentic looking boxes with the corresponding papers/peripherals. I’ve seen lots of photos of reps surrounded by this stuff; again, something some collectors like to do.

So, I don’t see it as strange... well, no more strange than wanting to own these pieces of fakery in the first place!

I understand that people get Reps. Because they like the watch and design but can´t afford the original. I also understand to get a nice and fitting box for your beauty. But Papers... what for? If you have the intention to sell your fake as a gen. Or for people who act that they really have the gen to show off; that´s a different type of person than most rep collectors

I have to say, it’s not always because the person “can’t afford” the watch, sometimes the reps are soo good they can’t justify the massive price difference! I had a gen 111 Pam, saw the rep my buddy had and sold my Gen to buy a rep... id rather have that money in my
    Pocket lol

I love doing that. I take the rep and the gen and hand them both to tell me which is real and which isn't.

As for rep papers, I don't care much for the box, or the guarantee. But the manuals, those I love. Especially the older ones. If nobody reps a manual, then I buy books that show them in detail. It's a bit nerdy of course but I enjoy it.

My initial thought was why would you want rep papers, but suppose its just a case of different strokes for different folks.

I can understand wanting the box if you are getting your "grail watch" and want a nice display piece. I don't see spending the money on them myself....
However, I see the appeal of having the manual (or copy of one) for a watch, if just for the detail it provides about the gen, especially since we are getting clone movements as well...

I'm actually curious about the boxes. I always wonder whether the rep boxes are as good as the rep watches particularly the limited edition ones.
The only reason I'm not buying rep box is because it is only worth seeing ONCE and then off to storage.... waste of money & space.
Same reason goes for the warranty cards and papers.

Agree with your post, I'd like to add something: I can afford all the originals of the Reps that I own. Still, don't have any desire to own the Gens. The idea that I paid few months of mortgage doesn't make any watch any more sexy than it already is.

Hope this is not an attempt at a backdoor sale, bro. Those will get you into trouble here.

I'm the other way round. I've got a gen Rolex DD but no papers. It feels incomplete without them.

I don't hide that some of my watches are reps. I don't announce it either. My friends all know. Having rep box and papers doesn't make sense to me. If someone is in my office in my home they are close enough friends that they know I have reps. Box and papers is taking it too far.

All rep boxes are trash. Rep papers are only for fraud.
I did once get a gen box for a franken Breitling because it looked nice in the box.

As was the case with Horology House, I frankly cannot imagine a reason to have fake papers and a fake box to go with your fake watch, other than to try to sell it as a gen. Maybe my thought processes come from a dark place, but as Barnum or Bailey of Circus fame once said: "There's a sucker born every minute!"
