Question Where to Start just for new RepGeeks?

Hi I've been on here for a few day now and gone thru the forum and I find it really hard to find infomation like.... What's eta...what's the different movements and all the other little sayings like 7750 (or something like that)

I was just gonna suggest if you could have a newbie thread what has everything in one place so I can go an get some knowledge.....I've been on here for hours reading but where everything all over the place I just can't keep it in.
Even when I use the search bar what I have loads but I just find it useless as it never finds what I'm after.

I hope you can do something so all new forum users can find everything in one place plus I'm sure it will save all the frequent questions what Im sure annoy alot of old timers on here.

I'm sure it won't take that long as I know most of the info is on the forum somewhere!

May seem like I'm going on but I just want to get some knowledge instead of bugging and writing threads about what's eta? Different movements?? Etc

    thanks
    brad

Hi Brad welcome. Read the stickies in the forum sections. Especially the General section. This should be a start http://www.repgeek.com/showthread.php?t=1637

Tbh I'm open minded as long as the watch looks smart I suppose if I had to choose I like tag but after seeing a few pics in eye candy i'm really liking the look of some of the iwc watches

How about you remove the 100 post requirement for making new threads? This would promote two things:

    1) It would add credibility to the forums "1 million posts" advertisement, as the ad would no longer be tarnished by the thought that it was really just 10,000 users each making 100 garbage posts

    and more importantly;

    2) It would let new users, such as myself, obtain the information they need when deciding to join the forum and being unable to find a suitable post.

Ummm, is there a 100 post minimum to start a new thread? Are you sure that isn't just in the trade area?

(bradafc started this one, and he's still only got 26 posts)

    Exactly.

Perhaps understanding how things work before criticizing should be a rule.

    Brad,

I can only offer advice on the path I took.
    • Before going on a buying spree take your time to research the watches you like. The Eye Candy session is a good start to help you select.
    • Once you select the one(s) you like, use the search function to see what others have to say about that rep/movement/etc.. Make sure to notice the little details like version (the Rolex folks are really good on coming up with a new version of the same watch every few months ), dealer, factory, etc.
    • Depending on the brand you will see a lot of comments (e.g. Panerai and Rolex) and some with very few (e.g. Patek, Breguet)
    • Most reps are made with the same component/materials. When looking at the rep you want to buy research the parts. A 7750 with seconds that are not at 3 or 9 are usually problematic for instance.
    • Quality and dealer vary from brand and rep. There's never a single answer for those.
    • Take your time. No new member tutorial will be good enough for you. I've spent 1 year browsing thru a number of different forums before I bought my first rep. It pays to be patient. I know looking at the eye candy section doesn't really help with patience but trust me you will be happier this way.

Brad- the 4th link is in the VIP Section but here is the information referenced. Be prepared for a LOT of info

Another thing you can do (and what I did) was just spend a month or so reading, particularly the "Stickies" at the top of each section. They usually contain the most relevant information for the sub-forum and contain reviews, where to source a particular watch, "who has the best" type postings etc.

Look through the various brand sub-fora as well to get an idea of what is out there and what style you might like. I've had about every brand in my watchbox but come back to Breitling, Omega and lately Panerai (although I started off disliking Panerais... they grow on you sort of like a fungus).

Now- here's the info in that 4th link, grab some coffee and some snacks and dig in

    Useful links

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some useful links for rep and watch collecting. I am sure there are links allready posted on this forum. Feel free to post any links you have and they will be added to the list to make it more complete.

Whoa! sfa; that there post is probably the most valuable, and comprehensive collection of information on our rarified hobby I ever saw!
If I'd have come across something like that when I was first dipping my toe into this hobby, I wouldn't have spent the long months reading and searching and searching and reading across multiple fora.

Me personally. I've enjoyed my digging and research into all the myriad terms and abbreviations, and I feel it has given me a greater understanding, rather than just being spoon-fed the answers to specific questions.

To the OP, good luck in your research; I'm sure you'll find it a rewarding experience. And if all else fails, give Google a try. You don't need the rep fora to find out what ETA means.

The list of links compiled by onzenub, should do the trick.
As far as opening a new section....we are actually looking to consolidate what we already have.
I know it may seem a lot to take in,but take your time and ask, everything will come easy with time.
    Sidenote
The 100 post required are only for the posting of a sale thread.
I don't see the necessity to change that rule.

I can undersign this. Since 4 months I read and learn about Panerai and everyday I learn more about it. It dont will end with these learning

There is no short-cut to gain knowledge. Read all the posts you can; that is the only way for new guys to the hobby of replica collecting to learn about the hobby.

This and much more is available on the VIP section of the forums... spend $25 (one time in your lifetime) and beleive me you're gonna see it was the best money you've ever spent in this hobby.

These 2 links are a good start for any new RepGeek:

Unfortunately, or fortunately as many believe - there is no quick 1,2,3, *poof* RepGeek Expert tab.

The knowledge comes from some fun study of the threads, good reading, talking with your fellow RepGeeks and just enjoying the hobby from the ground up on a terrific site we have here.

J-C, I know this question comes up often in different contexts. Most recently I have seen it when newer members have concerns about the spectrum of available trusted dealers. Matt suggested that there may be utility in a "New Member Orientation Reading" section to feature your two threads mentioned above and the following:

Beginners Guide to Ordering a Rep Watch - new members, please review. http://repgeek.com/showthread.php?t=3756

Member & Dealer Trade Review http://repgeek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=50

And of course there is the SEARCH BUTTON http://repgeek.com/search.php?

Even while you consider streamlining the forum, spotlighting such a section for new members will undoubtedly assist with the overall comfort level and save the membership from having to re-print the same answers to all too common questions. A simple but effective response could be to read the New Member Orientation Section.

I don't know if this has been posted, but I stumbled across this thread and thought it would be helpful for new rep owners.
