Default Sharp Dressed Man (Remix): Suits Commit Social Suicide

In the other Sharp Dressed Man post, I mentioned how suits didn't have to be serious but I didn't quite mention how that worked. There's a lot of different "leisure suits" available. I know the words 'leisure' and 'suit' used together conjures an image associated with those polyester belted nightmares from the 1970s but there's nothing else to call these inexpensive, unstructured suits sold at places like H&M. But what if you wanted an exceptionally well-tailored suit with the unexpected, fanciful details usually reserved for much lower quality street suits? There wasn't an answer to this question because the question had never been asked but, in any case, there's an answer now.

Social Suicide, in the vein of Rock n' Row n' Roll legend Tommy Nutter, is a new luxury brand started in London by two friends turned business partners Simon Waterfall and Matthew Grey. The clothes are serious in construction but the tongue is planted firmly in cheek with the exceptional details they add to the slacks and jackets, like a trompe l'oeil-esque embroidered bouquet of flowers, an AK-47 and over 400 mother-of-pearl buttons shaped into the visage of Queen Elizabeth II. If their designs are not enough for you, they will embroider an exact copy of your tattoos on any suit you have made with them. I find their style socially aware, refreshingly ironic, intelligent and playful!

When I asked Win Chesterfield, who I posed questions to in Sharp Dressed Man, about this new Savile Row tailor turning traditional English suits on their ear, he replied, "It’s an interesting concept certainly. There is a dollop of innovation to what they’re doing. They look at fashion with their tongues firmly in cheek; some of the results are really rather amusing. However, it should be warned that ‘fadding’ men’s clothing has been attempted before. Printing onto smart wool jackets, however original the print may be, is quirky but only momentarily interesting. After this subsides, you’re left with a jacket that you might feel possesses an awkward asset. Men’s fashion may well take a more avant-garde route; the idea of asymmetric suits is particularly intriguing but it’s difficult to see outfits like Social Suicide overtaking high quality production of classic items."

Have a look and enjoy! And remember, the prices are reasonable for the Row and when the pieces go on sale, you can get these suits and jackets for the same price of cheap, off the rack suits. For those who can afford it, pay retail if you want. For those who can't or don't want to, wait for the sale. Like now.

Bang bang, that awful sound. Bang bang, my baby shot me down.

    Flower power.

Matthew Grey said of his brand,"Soft in the head? Better off dead . . . I'm not talking about the genuinely disadvantaged [mentally challenged]--God knows we've all got our weaknesses. I'm talking about a lazy, sloppy, paucity of thought. Thoughtless thinking. Unblinking thinking. We were all born with a brain so why the idiocy? Witless, lackadaisical pissaways. Millions of them."

THIS is being sharp dressed. There are solid silver razor blades hidden in this jacket's lapels to prevent head butts if you happen to get into a fight. Smart, dangerous style.

I'm a crazy b*tch but I f*ck so good you're on top it. Scratches all down your back to keep you right on.

    The passion of the price.

Simon Waterfall then said, " Social Suicide IS a fashion label--yes--but it is not a haven for the moronic. It is not an intellectual pariah. It is not, heaven forbid, shallow, stupid nor shiftless. It is NOT your average fashion label."

How do you think you measure up?

Matthew Grey expounds further: " It is progressive. It is, at least amongst its peers, intelligent. We aim to make suits that in some small way, offer up thought and laughter; hope and love; life for your living. Clothes should enhance the body but is there any reason they shouldn't also compliment the mind? Compliment your mind?" Yes, Matt, it compliments my mind. I appreciate the fact it doesn't patronize me or anyone else!

The only man bag some men will ever carry.

    Always look before you sit.

Oh, look! A gun that won't take another person's life. I like it!

On an invite to Buckingham Palace, Social Suicide co-founder Matthew Grey had this suit specially made with the profile of the Queen's head on the back. As you may know, when in the presence of the Queen, you are not permitted to turn your back to her. So, to be able to show her the design, he had to ask her permission to turn around first, which she readily granted. She thought the jacket was hilarious. They copied the jacket for others and it is one of the single most expensive, most labor intensive jacket they sell, not including slacks. On sale right now, this jacket can be had for less than a grand.

Here's one of the original photos from that night:

What do you think? Comments, questions and accusations welcome.

Sure! That'll be $100,000 Geekbux. I see the RG economy moves on Geekbux.

Matt and Simon are really cool and you can tell from watching the video, or speaking with them directly, they LOVE what they do. It's not just about money for them. But they ARE raking it in so i guess that's what all successful companies say.

Drifters need clothes? I thought they tried to reduce unsprung weight as much as possible, including wearing no clothes. That's what I recall from that crappy Fast & Furious movie. The first one anyway. They weren't going to trick me two more times with those sequels!

Oh look a suit that manages to combine (relatively) high cost with campy details. These have that "I bought this at Target" look stamped all over them.
Cute idea, but mixing the worst of low class with well cut suits merely takes a well cut suit and makes it lame. About as high-class as a tuxedo printed t-shirt. And as much "staying" power as guranimals. If you want to look cheap a suit really isn't the way to do it.

Their ****s are nice looking though. I do like their tie through the collar bit.

Over all though I've got to say pass. Flashy suits are fun until you wear them in public. Then you realize just how ridiculous you look.

Wow, while not for me, these really are impressive. The other suits I recognized the items were part of the clothes right away... EXCEPT the gun one. I thought for SURE that was an actual toy until looking closer and realizing like the others... that's PART OF THE SUIT! Amazing!

Last time I bought a suit was very uninspired. I knew a $400 suit I'd bought at Men's Wherehouse straight out of college was on it's last legs. The stitching was starting to go, and I didn't even want to wear it to a funeral, let alone a business event. So having an idea of my sizes I walked into a Banana Republic, found a 46L that fit me well, found the matching pants in an acceptable size, and I've worn that suit to whatever event necessary since.

Reading these articles, I can apprciate how blind I have been. Frankly, there is a LARGE part of the world I've been blind to over the years. I feel sheltered about some things in the world, and possibly fashion most of all. It was only recently I tried on a nice pair of "cowboy" boots for the first time and didn't think they were "simply rediculous" because I'd never even considered them before.

My tastes in watches have changed, with my looking at brands besides Panerai, and finding certain styles, metals, and ideas facinating. I'm interested in a few Rolex as I NEVER have been before. And at the same time I can find beauty in Hublot, Chopard, Dewitt, Tag Heuer, and so many more!

And certainly if money were no object, I'd LOVE to get my passport, head STRAIGHT to London, and visit A Suit That Fits! I've never liked pinstripes very much, but the blue "gun" suit above strikes me as quite classy, as does the one from your first post where the guy is thinking of jumping off the building. I'm mature enough to say that's a good looking guy, and that's a HELL of a suit he's wearing in that photo!!!

Thank you so much Posh for helping open my eyes. It's a real service you've done for me. Letting me realize some of the beauty of the world before it's too late. Please never stop writing, as I don't know what else I could be missing! Well done!!!

The Rocker is fantastic... The vixen is also very interesting, and the track jacket would look killer with a light wash jean

Some very trick designs - not for my age bracket, but super cool. Not trying to pump sunshine up your skirt, Kid, but you should be a fashion consultant for the Rich and Aimless. Probably lots of money to be had, and you can have your own Reality TV show.

    I understand, Gramps.

Maybe I should. The Rich and The Aimless would be a good name. Everyone needs direction, even me. But people need information on spending money WISELY, selecting whatever they select with as much information as possible. There's no reason to spend money simply because you have it; hopefully, those days are over. Now, it's getting the most from your dollar, euro or pound. It's possible and hopefully I make that easier for people. You can still look like you have money even when you don't.

As God as my witness, NO ONE will be without luxury again!

Oh, sorry, T. The answer we were looking for was playful. Yes, the flowers are considered playful. I'm sorry.

Thanks for playing! We have some lovely parting gifts for you. Roddy, tell him what he's won!

So I finally went to thread tools and viewed the page in "printable version" so I could see the entire post. My favorite one looking at them all HAS to be "The Vixen", not to mention Posh's comment...

"I'm a crazy b*tch but I f*ck so good you're on top it. Scratches all down your back to keep you right on."

That's AWESOME. Link me to the page where I can get that one!

FYI, this post doesn't load on Safari (Apple's browser). It cuts off the post after the Matthew Grey said of his brand," after the rocker picture. I had to load it in a different browser in order to see the whole post. Weird.

I think this has been rectified. If not, just click on setup for printing and it will all load, or so I'm told.

"De Gustebus Non Butandum Est" Latin which translates into "In matters of taste , there can be no argument". This applies to Suits, Watches, Cars, Art, Hairstyyles, etc. To each his own.

If I ever had one complaint about our forums who are populated by rep watch collectors, it would be those who seem obliged to piss all over another members taste in watches. Taste is a choice and to be respected.
