Thank you so much, TTK, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Thats job of an analyst and certified F.G. LOL He is a polarizing figure in all circles, from the otaku scene to art to fashion. I guess that's better than being an also ran; I think he and his creations are a lot of things but forgettable isn't really one of them.

Yeah, I can see that. That's why I tried to showcase everything that makes Murakami Murakami. It's definitely noteworthy either way.

Now if only you had waxed lyrical on Masamune or Muramasa....that would have definitely piqued my interest...

No one had a word to say about Murakami! Instead of one man creating what some would call bad art, this man has a team helping him create art for hundreds of thousands dollars! And it's anime based!

How did Richard Prince trump Takashi Murakami in kitsch?

By coming up with what has to be the best take on the monogram since the 2003 Murakami? Words (and bad jokes) with those fantastic paint splashes really give that boring brown LV look great pizazz, no?

Hee, nah, I'm a Murakami fan for sure, but I have to say I was disappointed with the Monogramouflage - the joke series trounces it for sure IMHO. Thanks for the article tho! It made me sadder that I missed the LA MoCA retrospective sigh

I just saw this. Sorry! Been away.

You make some good points. I like the Jokes because they are off the wall but Monogramouflage has its good points; it at least has a consistent pattern. But I will say this, people had a lot more to say about my Richard Prince article than this one. I think Prince's work contains "more art" than Murakami's, even in the bags.

Pictures from the MoCA exhibit are available at Murakami's site, I think. They are pretty cool. Take a look.

I was just scrolling through, and now I know what kind of LV bag my aunt has now. Last time i saw her, she had the speedy 35, and in my opinion it looks unique.

I have to admit, I haven't read through all of these Posh, but one day i will put a day aside and read them all. Till then, keep up the Great work!

Thanks, M. By the time you get around, if you haven't kept up, I will have already gathered them into a book.

Wow, I just read this thread and can only say the only thing less appealing to me than anything from LV, is LV with cartoons painted on the cheap leather that LV brands as it's own.

Does everybody understand that the Vuitton family made it's bones collaborating with the Vichy French and Nazi Germany during the second world war?

Is there any greater example of ostentatious materialism that this company proudly pulls out of it's trousers every day?

You hit it right on the head. Most, but certainly not all, it's products are about ostentatious materialism, and a fine luxury goods corporation they would be if it wasn't. The cartoons may be kinda kitschy but the world has proven it's love for kawai in all its forms. Even on a $5,000 bag. I don't understand it or pretend to; I just present it and let the people decide. I was as objective as I could be, I think.

The Vuitton family's involvement with both the Vichy and, indirectly, the Nazis stems from them being a major, high-profile company in Paris at that time. There wasn't much choice given to them or any companies within France at that time to save their legacies; Vuitton had been a over century old at that point and an important French national and international icon. It was choose a group, choose now or lose everything. I can understand them not wanting everything they'd worked so hard to achieve.

I'm mishpucah and I personally absolve them.

    Posh,

Everybody has a choice, and their choice was to collaborate. Hey, who cares about 20 million killed 60 years ago.

Your writing is not only interesting, but provocative when you use first person, which allows your feelings to show through the passive portions.

That was a little bit of a writer's joke...

    Are you with an agent?

That's true. It's war and war is terrible for everyone involved, no gets out of a war unharmed.

There were Jews who were forced to do unspeakable things to other Jews in order to preserve their own lives or the lives of their loved ones. And some of these people are still living and carrying these memories and emotions with them everyday, some even own businesses or have owned businesses. Are these fellow Jews people I or other Jews should shun? Or should I only become indignant when it's a nameless, faceless coloration? Where do I draw the line, under your rules? Or I should I have refused to sit next to that person for Rosh Hashanah at the rabbi of John's Hopkins' house yesterday?

No, I have no agent. LOL

That's what many people wonder. I guess this means that Marc Jacobs is a creative genius but his business acumen is really unsurpassed within the fashion world except by maybe Ralph Lauren.

No, I'm afraid not. This bag is as close as you can get. The bag is for those wealthy Anime fashionista/fashionisto N.E.R.D.s. I would never buy this bag but respect those that would. LOL

I never saw this thread before.

One of my ex-clients used to be the Gm for a Louis store in Manhasset, NY. I waited over 6 months for my ex's limited-ed Murakami Retro. Forgive the piss-poor lighting--she took these years ago for the insurance, after it was about 3 years old or so--iridescents and bad white-balance make the colors look off. I think we wound up selling it when it was worth $3,500. Almost doubled my money on it.
