    Default Newb from Calgary

    Hey guys,
Total watch newb here but slowly learning - incredible amount of information on these boards so it'll take some time I apologize in advance for the incredibly ignorant questions that are to follow.

I love the look of the Hublot Black Magic! It looks like it only comes in 44mm which seems large to me - is this pretty standard? I'm looking at PTW for watches and these two caught my eye:
    http://www.puretimewatch.com/product...-full-ceramic/
    http://www.puretimewatch.com/product...mic-all-black/

    Any suggestions and tips?

Wow thanks for the welcome, seems like an awesome community here - can't wait to get more familiar with watches (but not so excited about how much this new hobby may end up costing me lol).

Hi to all the Calgarians and others who welcomed me. It was actually Rage2 and the Nice Watches thread on the Beyond forums that got me interested in the first place.

luckylance88 - are you referring to the first link I posted? How do you like it and what are your thoughts so far? I can PM you if you'd like.

whyser - I have no idea what the difference in between the newer and older black magics are - I'll PM you about your current HBB.

Anyways, here's some of the (many) questions that are going through my head before I make a decision:
-Is 44MM pretty standard size or is it a bit larger than normal? I don't want a clock on my wrist lol.
-What should I expect for duties/shipping if I order from Trusty or PureTime?
-Are these great quality watches that will last me years or will I have to service them often?
-What are the real key things I should be looking for when purchasing an HBB?

To be brutally honest (and I hope I don't offend any of the real watch gurus here), I'm not too worried about getting a 1:1 rep. I don't expect to encounter a lot of watch experts in my day-to-day and certainly don't think they'll get a close up look of my watch to compare to gen anyways. I'm really just looking for a great quality watch that looks beautiful and will last me years. I'm not overly concerned if there's a small flaw here and there compared to gen, I just don't want to have to service it often.

Hope that helps paint the picture. Would love some input from the community to help kick off my new (and potentially costly) hobby!

    Cheers!

I am not qualified in any way to comment on most of your questions but I will try to answer some of them:
    - duties, etc. - usually not an issue if you have your watches shipped via the postal service. EMS transfers over to Canada Post one it hits our shores. STAY AWAY from FedEx or UPS.
    - 44 mm is not too large.
    - if you want years of good service, I think you should be looking at quartz watches. The mechanical ones (from what I can see) will eventually need service or just die.

Hope this helps. Should meet up sometime to compare notes.

    Thanks Rod!
Great info - appreciate your feedback. Would love to chat sometime, feel free to fire me a PM.

As for service - I can accept that mechanical movements eventually need service, but are we talking about after 5 years, or 5 months? And how much would it cost to service them and where can we get them service (since they're reps and not gen)?

Since you're in Calgary, we can meet up get it serviced for you. You should do it right after you get the watch as the movement is usually delivered quite dry. After servicing it should be good for about 5-7 years.

Is there a rep friendly place to get automatics and hand winded ones services here?

I've got a feeling we won't have enough snow in Dallas/Fort Worth to make a good base this year. Someone get me a Sunshine Card!

When you get ready to do IWC mods, PM me.

Received an email from PTW Quality Control with some images of my watch to confirm it's good to go before they ship.

I took a look on my laptop and it looked fine so I let them know it was good to ship, but I took a look on my computer and noticed what looks to be some damage on the side.

I'm no expert but it doesn't look right to me.

I've used their live chat (which was super fast btw) and responded to the email with the photo above highlighting the area. Hope it works out, I'll update once I hear back from them.

EDIT: Nevermind, they got back to me super quick and it looks like it was just a reflection. Great customer service so far, thanks PTW!
