    Default 867-5309/Poshy: Call me . . . help me.

I am getting a new phone tomorrow (or in the next several days) as one of my early Chanukah present from my boyfriend. I got the itch because he just got a Blackberry Storm that I'm certain he loves more than me. I saw that it had GPS and that feature is intriguing to me because I have a terrible sense of direction, hate using maps of any kind and regularly get lost in DC (even to places I've been to before); and I will use MapQuest only when I absolutely have to because I find their directions cryptic sometimes and, in the case of D.C., inaccurate. He asked me if I wanted to go look at phones at AT&T and I agreed because we were already out yesterday doing some window shopping. I am thinking that was a mistake now because I've become frustrated with the total experience so far.

The first AT&T store we went into was moderately busy but not at all swamped, which surprised me. However, I was immediately glad because I thought I would get informed assistance from a saleperson. Riiiiiiiight . . . Well, I must be f_cking retarded because that didn't happen. I can't believe I expected these salespeople to know their f_cking product!

I must be spoiled by my work. In luxury goods, there's no such thing as not knowing your product and your competitor's product; even if that product never comes up in the conversation it's best to assume that the client has cross-shopped, especially in cars. It's folley to think that an individual looking at a Quattroporte hasn't at least sat in a Flying Spur or even a CLS. And it blows the entire scene if you're in a Louis Vuitton and an SA doesn't know that each year the Epi Alma comes in at least one limited edition color and since 1985. Well, this was worse for me and this is exactly why I've owned the same phone since I entered college. Oh, and if you want to know if your Louis Vuitton SA is worth a damn, ask them which pattern came first, Damier or Monogram Canvas.

Anyway, the salesperson asked me if I wanted some help and I told him I was looking for a new phone and was interested in the BlackJack II, since I'd heard good things about it from Epinions and the price was appropriate for an item with the shelf life of yogurt. Well, I must have been speaking in tongues because he took me right over to what I found out was a Samsung Epix which he claimed was "one thousand times better" because it was "so much newer." And I told the guy that this didn't look like what I saw online and he said I should try it and I would see that this was a better choice. I was annoyed but I fiddled with it (to be polite) and thought it was okay but not for that kind of money. He then thought it would be prudent to ask me what phone I had already and I told him. He immediately pushed me away from the Epix and toward something called the QuickFire which has EVEN LESS features than my LX, GPS notwithstanding, but that he swore was "better" than what I had. Although it was certainly a nice phone, it wasn't professional-looking at all so I asked to see the BlackJack II again. He took me over to it, finally, and just then decided to ask me what I planned on doing with it. I said I wanted it to use as a phone (duh), hold contacts, do a lot of texting and sync with Outlook. He said that it should be able to do all that and then just left me with it! I tried to get it do things and failed miserably. It was sitting next to a Motorola Q, which looked very similar. That phone seemed to match the BlackJack for features but was not as attractive and, quite frankly, I want a cute phone. LOL

Well, in any event, I had no idea what I should be looking for or what I was looking for exactly (but I knew what I didn't want) and felt like I'd just been hit by a truck on the Information Superhighway and left for dead. The saleperson, while looking the part of well-groomed technocrat, was really just there to stand around and point at things that were new and therefore "better." I said we had to go to a store where someone would be more helpful. Remember, this was an uninitiated visit to look at phones and so I definitely needed a great deal of advice. My boyfriend's response was to shut the f_ck up with the whining and get a Storm. I don't know if I mentioned this already but I did NOT want a Blackberry.

I did not like the service there so we left and went to another AT&T store nearby; service there was better because the salesperson seemed like she at least knew what the products did. But she was insistant on me looking at the iPhone before answering any of my questions about the Blackjack II. I mean, she was not overly aggressive but she absolutely knew that what I needed was an iPhone. Even though I didn't say anything about needing to watch movies, TV or listen to music, she went on and on about those things as if it was going to CHANGE MY ENTIRE LIFE! She at least had one which greatly helped lend her spiel credibility but her comments and presentation was a little too effusive. I've seen the iPhone in action as several people I know have them but I didn't think there was a great deal to it. Everything the first generation one did my LX did as well, and actually faster. The thing that kind of stopped her from hooking me up to the iPhone Soul Transplant machine was when I asked her what justified this cost over any other phones which were as capable if not more capable. The reason she felt I should have this over the BlackJack was 1) it would reduce the need to carry my iPod AND a phone in my purse 2) it looks good and 3) it was Apple. I sh*t you not. That last reason she considered an important factor for me. She never once asked me what I wanted from my phone so she couldn't match up to a product that way. Needless to say, I left there with no phone either.

I am so upset and confused over this whole mobile phone thing! I have used a T-Mobile Sidekick forever, since T-Mobile was Voicestream, and love it. My latest one is the LX which I LOVE but want something that's more professional. While this phone is great at a club, it looks very childish anywhere else. My Paris Hilton phase has passed and I think I would like something upscale, professional but not too trendy. I do NOT want a Blackberry and I kinda think I don't want an iPhone. I want something easy-to-use, like anybody else I suppose, but I am not afraid to crack a manual and read how to use a product.
Price is not a factor IF the phone justifies its cost through killer design, one-of-kind features or exclusivity. And no, I do NOT believe in buying a replica phone. LOL International RepGeeks chime in as well because I don't mind getting a phone from outside the US if it means I can have everything I want. And I do want everything.

I didn't realize exactly how many choices I would be bombarded with, really. I then go online and get equally if not more so overwhelmed than I was at the stores yesterday! I need some advice from anyone who's used any of the phones I'm looking at or has some insight into what would be best for me, either based on first-hand experience or knowledge about phones. This is another caveat to all this: I need at little bit of objectivity. There seems to be a remarkably little around. Your advice is greatly appreciated and I'm certain it'll help others too.

i picked up a HTC Touch Pro the other day.

Has every feature i can use and then some.
the GPS is an option, (there is free GPS software on the phone, i have not enabled it) i have to wait another day to get the Garmin software uploaded and some other GPS overlays that i would like for work.
The user interface is decent and intuitive, someone with small hands may find it excellent.
i had no issues synching with my computer (even with other active synch devices), and setting up the various email addresses i use was quite easy.

there are models out there without the keyboard, but i thought i would like it to replace my PDA for work so i went with the keyboard.

that's about all i can say on this phone as i've only had it a couple of days and really haven't put it through a full scope of usage.

i'm not sure what it cost, i just signed the bill. it's more than likely cheaper anywhere outside of canada anyway.

Stay away from windows mobile - you'll thank me later.

The Iphone is the only game in town if you actually want to do anything other than make calls or send email.

You had me a little confused at first because you were talking about your BF's BlackBerry Storm, which is not available on AT&T (exclusive to Verizon), then talked about your Sidekick, which is a T-Mobile product ... yet you went shopping at AT&T.

I know you said you didn't want a BlackBerry, but before writing them off, go back to an AT&T store and look at the Bold. It might change your mind about BlackBerry. The HTC Touch Pro is also a great phone, but I suspect you'd find it too bulky.

The BlackJack II is a good phone, and I bought one for my father. He likes it and it does what he needs it to do. He does complain about the small keys, but he doesn't text at all, and just sends the occassional email. If you have big fingers (or long fingernails) you might not like it long-term if you do a lot of texting and email. The Bold or the Touch Pro would be better choices.

I would also suggest seeking out the Sony Ericsson Xpedia X1, which I am sure you would find sexy ... but it's going to cost you ...

Any of the above can handle what you listed your requirements to be. I can't stress enough to try out the keyboards extensively while making your decision if you plan to use text and email a lot on the phone.

i have been using windows mobile for years without issue, and the HTC skin overlay is a giant leap forward compared to what else is out there.

the iphone is great too, just not carried by the major provider in this area and i already have an ipod touch.

That said, go with the iphone. The Storm sucks and all the other blackberry devices look primitive.

Although the Sony Xperia X1 is worth a look.

This looks nice. I will check AT&T and see if they have it. I wonder if it will work with them if not. It's simple-looking but I like that sleekness. Hmmmm . . .

Why is Windows Mobile so bad? I use Windows on my laptop. Wouldn't that mean it would have better compatibility? I find it hard to believe that the iPhone is only phone that can do anything.

And if you've used the iPhone and a Windows phone, what advantages did you have over the Windows phone with the iPhone? As I stated above, I need objectivity. Is it the iPhone the bestest phone out in the world or is it hype?

OK for one thing it will do what every other phone does, which is make calls

2, you can text obviously, its a cell phone. Every cell phone should be able to text.

3, i am pretty sure it will sync with outlook. I know the Nokia are capable of doing that.

4, Nokias look nice, especially the N series, they are nice and elegent. They stand out, people will know you have a Nokia. But most nice ones will cost you. I recommed the Nseries, way better than the other Nokias.
    I'll be back.

lol yes I am. I have owned 13 windows mobile phones over the past 8 years or so, including many replacements for ones that didn't work properly. I know dozens of people that have bought windows mobile phones. I don't know of a single person that gets buy for one day without it crashing randomly or on incoming calls. Nobody is making 3rd party software for windows mobile anymore either.

Tom, I'm not afraid to change providers in order to get the phone I want or the plan I want. My boyfriend has Verizon, and I don't mind their offerings, but I wanted to stick with a phone company that uses SIM cards, if possible. That's a reason why I probably won't switch to Verizon or Sprint, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility. My entire immediate family (mom, sister and dad) all have Sprint so I'm familiar with their phones and plans.

Is the Touch Pro a regular PDA-sized phone? If so, that may be too bulky but I will look at it. A touchscreen makes me salivate but I'm used to not having one so I could easily forgo it for something without one if it has a host of other features.

The other windows based phones are a real PITA IMO. There are unnecessary delays and quirks that are so PC like that it's irritating. Even the iPhone 3G is slower and pauses between screens unlike the original iPhone. The biggest problem with the iPhone is battery life simply sucks. If you do a lot of texting or use it throughout the day for things other than calls, the battery won't last a day. Also, signal quality is poor compared to other phones. I had a lot of dropouts and no signal zones with my 3G iPhone and non-3G iPhone. The Blackberry does what it does well and without issues so if you are looking for a true business phone that's all business with excellent call quality and signal quality.... go BB. Just my .02.

It's so weird. I know people swear by them and all but I find them confusing. Every time someone hands me one I can't imagine how they do anything with it, with the multitude of icons and numerous sub-menus. I can't even bring up last calls on a BlackBerry. People who've had them for years don't have trouble but to someone new to the layout, it's daunting. I am actually very intimidated by the BlackBerry because of this. I look at it and wonder if I'll ever get the hang of it and be able to use it to its full extent like I am able to do with my Sidekick.

I want something more business-like but still something I can do fun stuff with, like maybe watch a movie once or listen to music when I'm standing in line or something. These will by no means be the primary use of the phone. The main thing it needs to do is email and text and organize some aspects of my life. Should I even be looking at something as elaborate as elaborate as smartphone?

I really think I want a keyboard. I do a lot of email and I text RELIGIOUSLY. I'll text someone or email them before I'll ever call them up. If see them face-to-face, then I may talk to them. LOL

That said, go with the iphone. The Storm sucks and all the other blackberry devices look primitive.

Although the Sony Xperia X1 is worth a look.

Thanks, Rub. This Sony has been mentioned twice so I'll look at it. Does it have a keyboard? The iPhone has a lot of adherents so maybe I'm crazy in not just getting one and seeing how it goes.
I'm so scared of getting a phone I'll not really like and then be in a year contract and 30 days out of the return period.

caus its in fashion to rip on anything MS made... duh.

But, to answer your question (at least the second part). No, it would not mean better compatibility syncing with your windows desktop.

Windows Mobile is not windows. And all phones are designed with windows in mind: symbian, win mobile, iphone, etc. Yes, iphone missed out on exchange at the beginning, but is ok now, but has always been able to sync contacts as well as the others.

i have iphone, and no... its not perfect. its decent, and it does most of what it tries to decently. (ipod on it blows badly imo). but im sure that topic has been beat to death 1000 times already.

you're going to find fanboys of both camps out there, just like with Windows versus Mac, and Xbox versus PS3, coke versus pepsi, and chocolate versus vanilla... etc.

I'd ask our european geeks to tell ya what is hot on the market there.. when i was in the UK, they had a lot nicer phones than the rubbish i was seeing in the states at the time..

while iphone is US first, much of the nokia/sonyericson/etc phones come out in UK before here..

though, you will pay more for an unlocked non subsidized phone.

wish i could help.. i havnt looked at phones since i bought mine... but , the high end nokias were good feature wise when i saw them at last years CES.. they were pushing the latest n95 or n9x series at the time... bit pricey, and maybe even 'teh suck' now, but caught my eye in a sea of other gadgets.. but no keyboard if thats important to you.

and maybe not stylish enough.. who knows... (and no, ive not owned one, it c ould suck ass.. but it has a nice cam, gps, and other crap.
    ... 2020...

The Touch Pro is a PDA sized phone, but any phone with a slide out keyboard is going to be naturally thicker than one that is not.

For example, your BlackJack II is 1/2" thick, whereas the HTC Touch Pro is 3/4" thick. The BlackBerry Bold is in between (0.6") and the iPhone is about the same as the BlackJack II.

Yes, you should be looking at a smartphone, based on the requirements you've listed ... especially the heavy use of email and texting. If you really feel the need to do things like music/movies occassionally, then the iPhone is the way to go. As long as you can deal with the keyboard. That's why I recommend making that a priority in your search.

Any OS is going to be new for you, and eventually you will get the hang of any of them (including the BlackBerry). So the most important thing is to make sure the device will do what you need it to do most. If that's good telephone reception find the best phone, if it's texting and email, find the best keyboard, if it's internet access, find the best browser ... you get the idea.

In most cases a carrier will let you return a phone within 30 days, so make sure you run it hard for those 30 to make sure you like it. Or sell it on eBay and try something else ... which is the other great thing about GSM (sim card) phones. Switching is painless ...

Posh, both the BlackBerry World Edition and Storm use sim cards and are dual mode, so they work overseas. In my opinion, Verizon has the best network, coverage-wise. The BlackBerry is, frankly, very intuitive, and very easy to get the hang of. Not at all daunting (plus, you have your BF to give you private instruction). My screen name would suggest that I love my BB, and you'd be right in assuming so. Give it a try.

I am going in with a "take no prisoners" attitude tomorrow so I'm ready to really sit and try to make one of these work for me. I will put this right on my list. I'm going to really try and give the interface a try and not be judgmental.

I will also give this one a good look and see if it'll work for me. The non-keyboard thing really, REALLY irks me but I'll be objective.

I plan on being very open to a BlackBerry. I was just out with the His Majesty and I actually toyed with the Storm a bit when usually I wouldn't ever use it at all. I just was totally put off by the way it worked compared to my Sidekick. But since everyone seems to really enjoy their CrackBerry, I should at least see if it's grown up enough for me or too adult. LOL

I will probably spend at least a good 30 minutes with each phone there so I can see what will work. I don't wish to rush into a purchase but if it goes well, I'll come back with something.

Thanks Spekoli for the size comparisons, too. Size always matters. And anyone who says it doesn't, hasn't had a big one before.
