Default Endless Love: Marriage dead? Why?

Diablo2112's "RepGeek and the Single Guy" thread brought up some thoughts and varied ideas, but since it's closed, I can't add to it so I'm starting this one. Please jump in and let's discuss this, whether you're for or against it.

This is what I think about when I think of marriage:

My father, who was a very active man and even more so now, had a MASSIVE heart attack a couple of years ago. Being a daddy's girl, I still feel pangs of guilt because I wasn't there when it happened; I was out at a club with some friends. When I arrived home in the early morning, the house was empty and there was a note asking me to come to the hospital left by my mother and little sister. When I arrived at the hospital, I saw my dad who had always been so strong and fairly imposing, lying on a bed with every tube imaginable going into his body. It was such a demoralizing sight to see the man that had always loved and protected me in what was essentially a defenseless condition.

When family members and friends heard about my father's heart attack, they converged on the hospital like locusts. I come from a close Italian and Jewish family so we had relatives stacked to the rafters in our house for two weeks and no food after they all left. He had former and current clients, colleagues and even three or four old college buddies visiting him for probably three weeks. Each night, those people were gone. My mother called and canceled her patients and was by his bedside night and day, coming home only to shower and change clothes, something she only did once because she did not want to leave his side for even a minute. She stayed at the hospital for two weeks solid. My sister and I eventually packed her some clothes so she could remain with him; she said she couldn't leave him because he wasn't "out of the woods" yet, her place was by her husband's side until she was sure he was safe.

What I witnessed was loyalty, love and caring, 35 years of marriage worth. I'm not saying my parents are perfect or have "the perfect marriage," because the definition of that varies from couple to couple. But what I DID see was commitment and a shared history and future. A lifelong bond that we all should hope to someday have, if you don't already.

After the whole ordeal, when it was less of a touchy subject with him, my father took my sister and me out to dinner and we discussed that time period and how he felt. He said that it was a frightening time for him but the one thing he had, besides the doctors and G-d, was my mother and without her being there, he wouldn't have recovered as quickly.

A member posted this site, No Marriage, and one of the articles is this, F*cking decent mid-priced wh*res twice a week is less expensive than a wife. I would really like to see this wh*re care about you when times aren't so rosey and you aren't so tough.

There's seems to be waaaaaaaay too much cynicism for the other way. I don't get that at all.

Great you have proved there are exceptions to the supposed horror of women. Anyone with the tiniest sparks in their cranium would have realized not all women or men are the same. To extend the hate speech and degradation allowing such conversation that is narrow and futile seems below you. A waste of time and intelligence.

Good post, Posh. Marriage (and family life in general) is the cornerstone of every advanced society. Once marriage goes, the whole social fabric begins to decay. I am afraid that this is happening in all quarters of the US and it will be our downfall.

Call me old-fashioned, but it works for me and has worked for generations of civil society.

    All the best,

Interesting that you post this now Posh.

Marriage is a touchy subject to many people and each shares their own personal views on this.

For me I will be the first to admit I'm a romantic at heart. My parents had a romantic marriage from the start, with a less than ideal end as he passed away soon after I was born.

I've grown up around many women in my life, and my mother is the sort to have many men around her too. And yet through it all, she's always told me, she's never found one whom she could see herself grown old with.

Since then, that's been my standard. It isn't, do I love this girl? Do I want to marry her? Is this the next step and what society wants and expects? But can I see myself growing old with her.

The concept of marriage in itself in this day and age I feel has been twisted from what its meaning truly was. It was and should be a commitment between two people as a visible sign that they want to grow old with one another and share their lives together. Its not something to trifle with and its a very important decision.

Yet I see many around me who I feel sometimes don't grasp the severity of it. I feel that the importance of sanctity of marriage these days has been diminished with the ease of divorces, the constant pandering to sex and selfish desires.

We forget at times that a relationship is not just about your own happiness, but that of your partner. Of needing to share, and in many instances, sacrifice your happiness for the wellbeing of the "couple".

So yes, I do believe in marriage, but I also recognise that marriage is not for everyone and for every couple. No marriage is ever pristine. There will be tough times in all of them. Its never like in the movies where the heroine falls in love with her hero and they get married and live happily ever after. Its tough work living happily ever after.

I don't think people have these ideas without reasons and I like to hear people's reasoning. If they are valid, they will stand on their own without need of defense. My grandmother said the truth needs no defense, it defends itself. If some members choose to put forward the idea that women are a certain why, explain why. I may not believe in their conclusion, but I'll listen to it and respect it as long as they respect my conclusions.

My mom's a psychotherapist and she says she sees more thought processes influenced not by what we actually know about personally, but by what we see portrayed in the media. RepGeek is a form of media. If men and women hear that all women are so wicked and selfish that they're not worth even the time to pick them out a unique gift from the heart, for whatever reason, then that needs to be discussed, dissected and confronted.

I don't like the pressure to charge headlong into marriage society throws at us. It's just a piece of paper, when it boils down to it.

The whole "in front of god" bollocks has gone out of fashion, thankfully.

People stay together or split up in spite of marriage. It's just the way it is.

well, there's so many cynics because of bad experiences. there are less and less good people in the world it seems like, or at least marriage material persons. it isn't the 1950's anymore when most every girl you would meet would be a sweet virgin who wanted nothing more than to cook for you and make babies...that is when she wasn't at church. i have a friend that complains constantly about guys not taking her seriously, and there is no good guys, and guys are assholes that don't respect girls. i'm like, uh, dude, you've been with over 50 guys. what makes you think you DESERVE respect? respect is not just given, it has to be earned. everybody wants to be treated like a princess...but i'm sorry darlin' you aren't a princess

The other thread was closed by me because it turned sour and negative. You posting the link to that horrible site and making a new thread only instigates the previous. You want to argue ridiculous points on the internet by all means. Step back into the pile of manure, it is your time to waste.

Wonderful post, Posh. I married the first (and only) girl I ever dated, whom I met when she was 16 and I 17. She died of cancer six years ago, after a long marriage. That relationship was the foundation of my life, and I so much needed to find that again. G-d blessed me in finding another wonderful woman, who was similarly widowed by cancer, and to whom I have been married for the last four years. I know others may have bitter experiences for a variety of reasons, and may be cynical about marriage. But, when you have the right partner, it makes life beautiful. I wish you luck in finding such a person.

I've been with Mrs Pugwash for almost 16 years. We're still not married. There's simply no longer any reason for it.

I poked around the No Marriage site and want to believe the author feels that "Marriage is the cornerstone of society and should be treated with reverence."

Although perhaps he may have some of the same problems he identifies in women... i.e. unrealistic expectations, bitter, angry, extreme emotional and mental problems, unpredictable behaviour, difficult to be around and just have a plain old good time with, difficult to please, moods that vacillate constantly.... etc. lol
