Don't really know what happened to this thread.. don't care at this point

but this quote of yours above made me giggle to myself. Nothing like forcing progeny into things that we ourselves didn't want to do. Closing doors of others to keep ours open, etc.

    Just amusing is all.

    True, a bit harsh.

You can get a bigger discount if you raise smart kids, and force them to get financial aid/scholarships/student loans.
... student loans sounds harsh.. but.. knowing they have something at stake.. well.. might motivate them not to... slack off.

I swear, out of all the people i know who dropped out, I swear 90% of them were 'mommy and daddy paid for 100% of my schooling, this is great, its like a vacation'...

or an even bigger discount if you raise 'stripper whatever daddy complex' kids as mentioned about... schoolings real cheap then

My $0.02 on oberlin... nice school... but... FFS, its in the middle of Lorain County Ohio..

what? havnt heard of it? well.. lets see... i think theres some cows..

hrm.. a bit too far west for the amish in ohio.. but.. um... maybe a gas station..

    um.. very flat...

see where I'm going with this?

I addressed this. I didn't slack off because my mom and dad paid for all our schooling; that's wasting money and my mother's favorite saying is never throw good money after bad. They ingrained the value of education in us when we were VERY young.

And most great schools are in weird areas. My uncle went to Grinnell College and that's in Bumf*ck, Iowa. But it's a fantastic school that I actually was going to go to until I changed my mind about my major.

YOU can make your kids take out loans to pay for their school. MY kids never will. I will pay for their education until they say they are done with being educated. Simple as that. They will not start life off in debt.

What's at stake for them is my love, approval and respect. I own you. Don't
    defy me.

I think you missed the point..

you had commented on sending them there 'for the discount'

which you may have been midly joking about.. just pointing out if money was a concern, there are better options...

yes, its a good school, and good that you understand it is in the middle of BFE, but if little johnny wants to be a doctor or engineer, or whatever oberlin is *not* known for, forcing him to go to oberlin is kinda silly.

And I wasnt commenting on *me*, I havnt stated what I plan for my progeny..

and, i just have to poke a bit more

'they wont start their life out in debt'

oh, but i disagree... they will be indebted... to you rather than a bank..

    and emotionally rather than financially..

I would say that most great schools are usually in rather good locations... (ivy league, 7 sisters, johns hopkins, MIT, CMU, etc etc) at least... not in the middle of nowhere ohio (which is only slightly better than nowhere iowa)...

guess it all depends on how you rank a school...

whats with the no more wire hangers?

Luma - you are a genius man. You're the Arctic Monkeys of Repgeek!

Funny as fook, always playing the clown, but actually a bit cleverer than many think (I suspect)

Keep up the good work fella!

Of course I could be wrong and you might just be bonkers, but who cares - you make me laugh in most of your posts...and I mean that in a good way mate

You don't know where this is from? Even if you never saw that movie, you know this quote. Anyway, they can be indebted to me but I don't think I'll ever call in the loan. Loving your kids is loving your kids.

And yes, I was joking about the discount. You know, unlike the real Mrs. Beckham, I have not Botoxed the sense of humor right out of me.

While I respect this line of thinking and don't belittle anyone's hardships, I definitely know the major benefits of having a life that was more idyllic, so to speak.
Well, this is where you lost me.........

I like the way that you can disclaim your line of thought by adding that you respect that "line of thinking" it still doesn't absolve your fundamental train of thought here.

I grew up on struggle street, we were poor! I got 1 toy for birthdays (getting a school uniform was considered part of my present). I had 1football that I played with until it fell apart.....

My parents struggled thru their relationship, they divorced, I got shuffled between parents.....repeated years of school......went of the rails........

But was it their fault......was it mine......???????

    No

It's called life and there are people who had it a lot tougher than I did......

But I feel that I have turned out really well besides all the stuggles......I'm married, have a family, I work to live - not live to work...

I love the finer things in life and I think the struggles of my childhood, youth and early adulthood have only increased my appreciation for all the things I achieve and all that I have.....

If I was running around with a chip on my shoulders I don't think that I would be a Chief Surveyor for a mid-size mining company managing 11 other surveyors, I wouldn't have my house near the beach, I wouldn't be making the most of today and also looking forward to what tommorow might bring......

Struggle Street doesn't always leed to the wrong side of the tracks nor does it perpetuate hardship for ongoing generations - I think it keeps us grounded.....

And Posh, please don't bump into anything or fall over as you travel down that dark, narrow corridor that is your mind......

    Cheers, RICK
    whatever it takes:)

The response I get when I ask my wife if I can get another watch:
"...the short answer, Yes with an IF.....the long answer, No with a BUT!"

I think you misconstrued what I was saying and how I was trying to say it. I do not think anything I've said has intimated that having a less-than-Cleaver childhood is the MapQuest to Struggle Street, where one will remain for the rest of their lives.

I have nothing but fond memories from my childhood. I did not struggle and have not struggled and I thank my parents for that privilege. And maybe you can't see that, being a man, but most women don't want to struggle and they damn sure don't want their children to want for anything. That may be at cross purposes with the reality of their situations but that's what we want.

When I see someone suffering, I want to stop it. When I see a kid at Wal-Mart wanting something and mom saying we can't afford that, I hurt. These are maternal instincts that is very hard for some men to really understand.

I would also like to say I'm being candid and speaking for myself, albeit most women feel this way even if they don't say it out loud.

Well, that's where we are on the same page - even though from different perspectives

I feel for those kids too - because I was one and I feel for the parents who wish they could afford what the kids want.....

I bought my daughter a Wii the other day, she first asked for one months ago when the rest of all her friends got one, but we held off - for whatever reasons, she didn't harp or badger us about one, she knew she "might" get one, one day when Mum and Dad can fit it into their budget.

She didn't know she was getting it, she cried when she got it, tears of excitement and appreciation......................her reaction made the giving only more special......

My daughter, wife and I do not want for much in this world, but the work and effort to earn it is quite often more than the reward....

And I send Elli to a private school, I want her to be the best she can be, and all I need in return is her smile..........

    Cheers, RICK

Posh was a name change I allowed by a certain hot soccer player lurking on these boards that I may or may not know from a photograph that may or may not exist. Sbrubb, frankly, you don't know this woman and neither do I. She may be shallow or she may not be. Unless you are a close friend of hers, how would you know?

As far as I'm aware, she's not eating babies and she's not setting forest fires. She manages to also make sure her p*ssy and breasts are covered at all times with fabric so that's a definite plus in my book.

As far as her image goes, she puts forth an image of beauty, grace and poise while still being a devoted mother and steadfast wife. Some people prefer to do whatever good works their doing from the glare of media attention. She happens to be one of those people.

So saying that, I can wear my avatar with pride. I will not sport an avatar of Pol Pot based on what I know about him though.

I kind of laugh Posh when I think about some of my favourite actresses. Many of them are from the UK. One of my old favourites was Julia Ormond (who just disappeared from the whole movie scene):

and I really like Sonya Walger (CSI, LOST, etc.)

I had to agree with much of what was written below. I went to a private boy's school for 12 years, hold 2 undergraduate degrees from the University of British Columbia, and have graduated from Executive programs from Simon Fraser University (Business) and the University of Michigan (Human Resources). I've got a great corporate job with quite a bit of responsibility and even have the corner office with the view I mistakenly thought was so important years ago.

I also worked a lot as a kid (delivering newspapers, work in small restaurants), worked as a waiter when I was in university, got some help from my parents but had to borrow some cash for my second undergrad degree. I've met a lot of kids who didn't pay a dime for their education, didn't work at all when they went through school and many of them either got booted out of school for crappy grades and non-attendance (after all, mommy and daddy were paying).

As I've gotten older, and hired and managed a lot of people, I have to say that the best people I've either hired or worked with are the people who never had it too easy, had to work hard for what they got, and had character. I've also realized over the years what's important and value people I work with who have strong personal values - teamwork, innovation, determination - regardless of what school they went to or whatever.

    But hey, that's just me.
